There was a time when having a third row meant you had officially entered peak family life. Between kids, sports equipment, and endless carpools, bigger automatically seemed better.

These days, it feels like everyone assumes they need the biggest SUV they can fit in the driveway. The 2026 Kia Sorento would like a word. It still gives you three rows of seats, but in something that’s easier to park, easier to maneuver, and a lot less intimidating to live with every day.

The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

The Sorento sits below the Telluride in Kia’s lineup. It offers the flexibility of a third row without making you drive something enormous.

For many families, those extra seats are used occasionally rather than daily. They’re there for grandparents, carpools, or the friend your kid forgot to mention until everyone was already heading out the door.

If that’s your reality, then driving around in a giant SUV every day is sort of silly. Not every family needs maximum capacity all the time, even if the rest of the segment seems determined to convince us otherwise.

The Third Row Comes With Fine Print

The Sorento’s third row is handy, but nobody is mistaking it for first class. Kids will be perfectly happy back there. Adults can manage shorter trips, although volunteers for the third row may become harder to find as the miles add up.

The trade-off for easier parking and a smaller footprint is less space in the back. If you regularly carry a full load of adults or teenagers, you’ll probably want something larger. If not, the Sorento makes a heck of a lot of sense.

It Doesn’t Feel Cheap

The Sorento doesn’t make you feel like you cheaped out. The cabin looks good, the technology is straightforward, and there are enough available features to make it feel like you didn’t settle.

In a world where everything seems to come with an extra subscription fee and multiple screens, there’s something to be said for simply getting the basics right. You can hop in and figure things out without a tutorial from your teenager. Sometimes making life easier is more impressive than adding yet another screen.

Competence Is An Underrated Feature

The available turbocharged 2.5-liter engine has 281 horsepower, which turns out to be plenty for family duty. Highway merges are easy and passing slower traffic isn’t an issue, even when it’s loaded with people and cargo.

The hybrid is worth a look, too. It offers the same practical personality while using less fuel, although you’ll pay a bit more upfront to get it. Neither version is going to turn the school pickup line into an adrenaline rush, but that’s not why you buy a three-row SUV.

The Price Might Surprise You

New vehicle prices continue to climb, which makes it hard to find a three-row that fits your needs, wants, and budget. Thankfully, the Sorento hasn’t completely lost touch with reality. Pricing starts at $32,390 for the base LX, while moving into the better-equipped trims pushes things into the low-to-high $40,000 range.

Hybrid models add about $5K to that starting price, but they’re still more affordable than a lot of bigger competitors. It’s not cheap, but finding a three-row SUV with a price that doesn’t make you wonder if you’ve accidentally wandered into the luxury territory is increasingly difficult.

Common Sense Is Underrated

The 2026 Kia Sorento isn’t the biggest family SUV you can buy, and it won’t convince anyone that size doesn’t matter. Some families genuinely need all the space they can get. A lot of others have simply gotten used to the idea that bigger automatically means better.

The Sorento has enough space for everyday family life, the flexibility to manage cargo, and an interior that’s nice without making you worry the kids will destroy it with crushed Cheerios and spilled fruit drinks. It also doesn’t require driving around the parking lot half a dozen times to find a spot where you can actually fit.

This isn’t the right SUV for everyone. But before you convince yourself you need something bigger, it’s worth asking whether you actually do.
