The 2026 Chevy Equinox is a bit of a tease. It looks fantastic. Park it in your driveway and you’d swear you spent more than you actually did. The styling is sharp and it has far more presence than most affordable compact crossovers. Then you get inside.

That’s when the illusion starts to fade. The cabin is comfortable enough, but the abundance of hard plastic makes it feel like the budget crossover it is. Add an underpowered engine that struggles on the highway, and the Equinox quickly goes from looking like a bargain to feeling like a compromise.

The Exterior Is The Best Part

Chevy absolutely nailed the styling on the Equinox. In a segment filled with crossovers that blend into traffic, this one actually stands out. The front end looks aggressive without being overdone, the proportions are right, and the overall design feels modern and polished. More importantly, it doesn’t look cheap.

That’s not always the case with affordable vehicles. Automakers often make budget-friendly models look like budget-friendly models. The Equinox avoids that trap. From the outside, it looks like it belongs in a higher price bracket.

There’s Plenty Of Value Here

The Equinox also does a good job when it comes to standard equipment, which makes it a good value. Even lower trims come with features that buyers actually use every day, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Those aren’t flashy features nor are they especially high-tech. But they are the things youll come to appreciate. Do not underestimate the joy of staying toasty on cold winter mornings and the peace that comes from not having to manage a tangle of wires to connect your phone to your car.

The Cabin Feels Like Chevy Had A Budget To Meet

The problem is that once you’re sitting inside, it’s hard to ignore where some of that money was saved. The layout is straightforward and easy to use. There’s enough room for passengers, enough room for cargo, and nothing feels awkward or poorly designed. It’s perfectly functional.

The issue is the materials. Hard plastic covers so much of the cabin that the interior never feels as nice as the exterior would have you expect. It just doesn’t match the more upscale exterior. It’s a bit of a letdown because the outside looks so good. There’s just too much hard, emotionless plastic, It’s not a bad interior. It’s just a disappointing one.

The Engine Works Hard For Every Mile Per Hour

Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 175 horsepower. It’s fine driving around town at lower speeds and it responds well enough when you’re managing stop and go traffic. The trouble starts when you need more.

The engine works hard to build speed, and once you’re moving, there isn’t much power left in reserve. That makes highway merges a little stressful in heavy traffic and leaves you without the power to pass slower vehicles quickly. It’s not dangerously slow. It’s just slower than you’d like in situations where confidence matters.

Comfortable But Not Particularly Interesting

The Equinox handles exactly the way you’d expect. The ride is comfortable and rough pavement doesn’t upset the cabin. It does everything competently. What it doesn’t do is make driving interesting.

Steering is light, handling is forgettable, and there isn’t much engagement from behind the wheel. It’s neither fun nor frustrating. It simply exists somewhere in the middle. For many buyers, that’s perfectly fine. For anyone who enjoys driving, it’s unlikely to leave you wanting more.

A Good Choice If Your Priorities Are In The Right Place

Starting at $28,800 for the LT and climbing to $33,600 for the ACTIV before destination, the 2026 Chevy Equinox remains one of the more affordable compact crossovers on the market. That pricing helps explain some of the compromises, but it also reinforces where the Equinox makes the most sense.

It looks great, comes with a healthy list of standard features, and offers the kind of affordability that’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s market. As a first vehicle, a commuter car, or a family crossover for someone trying to keep costs under control, it makes a lot of sense.

Just don’t expect the experience to live up to the styling. The Equinox looks like it should feel more expensive, more refined, and more powerful than it actually is. Once you spend time behind the wheel, that’s the part that’s hardest to ignore.
