If you are shopping for a new truck this year, you’ll want to check out this list of the least reliable 2026 full-size trucks.
We compiled the data with our knowledge and using resources such as Consumer Reports, NHTSA.gov and online resources.
The list will start with the least reliable to most reliable.
2026 Ram 1500

The 2026 Ram 1500 was recently refreshed in 2025 with new exterior and interior changes as well as the new Hurricane lineup of inline 6 engines. It also sees the return of the 5.7L Hemi V8 engine and the high-performance TRX model. Like the others, it comes in a variety of cabins, bed lengths and trim levels. Notably, though, it is not offered in a regular cab setup.
Consumer Reports, on our article on their full-size truck listings, ranked the Ram 1500 as dead last for reliability and the brand is well below average according to JD Power.
Here are the most common issues owners have faced in the past:
Electrical System and Accessory Failures
- Dead batteries or parasitic battery drain
- Dashboard/instrument cluster freezes or blank displays
- Random warning lights/codes and electrical faults
- Power accessory malfunctions (locks, lights, USB/12V outlets)
- Infotainment system hangs, unresponsive touchscreen, or repeated error messages
Engine and Powertrain Concerns
- Check engine light activations often early in ownership.
- Engine misfires or hesitation codes leading to repeated service visits.
- Some reports of severe engine failures requiring major repair or replacement (including oil leaks and internal damage).
Forward Collision and Safety System Issues
- Collision avoidance system malfunctions
- Blind-spot and lane-departure sensor errors
- Adaptive cruise control not functioning correctly
Brakes and Safety Feature Failures
- Brake malfunctions
- Brake systems or parking brake warnings engage unexpectedly
Transmission and Shifting Problems
Some owners describe hard shifting, rough gear changes, or transmission behavior anomalies, such as sticking in a gear or rough first-to-second transitions.
2026 Toyota Tundra

The 2026 Toyota Tundra enters its fourth year since its major redesign in 2022. This full redesign produced a new interior, exterior and turbocharged V6 engines in either a gas or hybrid with a 10-speed transmission. It is often regarded as one of most reliable trucks on the market, yet hasn’t been able to reclaim that crown frustrating many of the brand loyal fans.
Consumer Reports ranked the Toyota Tundra 3/5 and JD Power ranked Toyota in their top 5 in their vehicle dependability study.
Several of the issues since its launch have been addressed. However, there are still concerns owners have been experiencing and they include:
Infotainment, Electronics and In-Car Technology
- Infotainment screen glitches or freezes
- Problems with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity and displays
- Backup camera software/errors and rear-view image failures (subject of a major recall)
- Random warning lights or system alerts
- Cruise control or stability control warnings
Related recall: Toyota issued a large recall affecting many 2022–2025 Tundras (and other models) because the rear-view camera display can fail due to a software glitch, impairing visibility when backing up.
Body Hardware and Fit-and-Finish Issues
- Misaligned or rattling trim pieces
- Interior fit/finish complaints
- Tailgate or latch noises
- Whistling or wind noise around doors and body seams
Brakes and Fuel System / Emissions Sensors
- Premature brake pad or rotor wear
- Brake pulsation or vibration
- Fuel system sensor issues (e.g., oxygen sensors, fuel gauge irregularities)
Engine and Powertrain Related Reports
- Engine performance checks or warnings
- Cooling system and heat management concerns
Note: A significant number of previous Tundra V35A twin-turbo V6 engines (2022–2024) were recalled for debris-related main bearing failure, and although official campaigns for 2025 and 2026 engines are not currently published for this specific problem, there is still a lot of concern among Toyota owners and fans about potential issues.
Vehicle Speed Control and Drive-By-Wire / Traction Control
Some owners have reported issues that trigger vehicle speed control warnings or traction control alerts (e.g., VSC/ABS lights), sometimes accompanied by intermittent stability control or braking system alerts.
2026 Ford F-150

The 2026 Ford F-150 is part of the best-selling truck lineup and like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is offered in a variety of cabs, bed and engine options.
Consumer Reports ranked the Ford F-150 as the most reliable truck while JD Power ranked Ford Motor Company middle of the pack. It is worth noting Ford set a record for the number of recalls it issued last year.
Here are the top items owners have had issues with in previous years:
Electrical System Problems (Most Reported)
- Malfunctioning wiring or modules
- Faults with interior/exterior lights and sensors
- Issues with USB ports, keyless entry, or 12V outlets
- Erratic warning lights and body control systems
Forward Collision Avoidance System Issues
Problems in this category involve driver-assist technologies, including:
- False alerts from adaptive cruise control or collision warnings
- Problems with automatic emergency braking
- Lane-keeping and lane departure sensor malfunctions
Brake System Complaints
Brake-related problems are reported relatively frequently:
- Premature brake wear or failure
- Brake pulsation or vibration during use
- Complaints of reduced braking effectiveness or unexpected brake warnings
Equipment and Accessory Faults
This category covers miscellaneous cabin and exterior equipment issues, such as:
- Malfunctioning non-safety equipment
- Trim and hardware failures
- Missing or defective labels and accessories
Powertrain (Including Transmission and Engine)
Powertrain complaints include:
- Transmission problems (e.g., rough shifting, valve body issues)
- Engine concerns such as leaks and performance irregularities
In addition, a specific NHTSA recall related to transmission valve body machining errors has been issued for some 2024-2025 F-150s due to reverse gear failure or unexpected movement, underscoring transmission-related concern trends.
2026 Chevy Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of the best-selling trucks on the market and comes in a variety of cabin sizes, bed lengths and powertrain choices.
Consumer Reports ranked these trucks 4/5 for the Silverado 1500 and 2/5 for the GMC Sierra. JD Power ranked both trucks are top picks for reliability.
Over the last several years, there have been a variety of issues owners have had issues with that new buyers should be aware of such as:
Transmission Failures and Rough Shifting (Most frequently cited concern)
Often described as:
- Rough or harsh gear changes
- Slipping between gears
- Failure to shift into certain gears (including reverse)
- Unexpected gear changes while driving
- Transmission seizing or malfunctioning under load
Engine and Powertrain Issues
- Engine stalling unexpectedly in motion
- Loss of power or sudden shutdown
- Premature internal engine wear or failure (e.g., connecting rod bearing issues leading to seizure)
Infotainment and Electrical System Malfunctions
- Freezing, lagging, or unresponsive infotainment screens
- Audio distortion or Bluetooth connectivity issues
- Erratic warning lights or instrument cluster glitches
- Complete electrical shutdowns in some reported incidents
Electrical System Problems Beyond Infotainment
- Dashboard and warning lights coming on simultaneously
- Loss of power steering or other essential functions in extreme electrical fault cases
- Various sensor and module problems
Engine Idle and Fuel System Symptoms
- Some owners report rough idling, misfires, and engine hesitation which dealerships attribute to:
- Spark plugs or ignition components
- Fuel system components or air intake sensor issues
The transmission issue was a big topic this last summer when GM switched to a different valve body that has seemed to fix several of the 10-speed transmission concerns especially with regards to a rear-wheel lockup issue at high-speeds. Looking at the NHTSA.gov and Consumer Reports data, it seems the number of transmission complaints is on a downward trend.
For the engine issues, there was a recall on the 6.2L V8 due to manufacturing defects that required dealerships to perform a test to see if the engine was good and then replacing the oil with 0W40 weight for customer’s piece of mind.
The other issues are fairly common in today’s world of higher-tech vehicles with all automakers struggling at times with backup camera functionality.
