Now Hiring – Multimedia Journalist
We are looking for a multimedia journalist to join our team as it scales up in the New Year. This person would be a journalist first chasing news stories while also reviewing vehicles, traveling to events and be comfortable being on camera. This industry is full of “car reviewers.” If this is you, thanks, but no thanks.
As a multimedia journalist, you will provide both written and video content for our outlet. We produce content in the form of written content for our website, MSN and video for social media and YouTube. You will be responsible for producing content for all of those areas and must be a self-starter able to produce content after little oversight in the future.
Qualifications:
The basics:
- You should know how to write, film and produce content independently.
- Journalism degree preferred. I can’t teach you how to write a news story. You need to have that figured out.
- Have a sense for finding a good story idea.
- Understand our outlet is focused on trucks and SUVs. Trucks first.
- Realize we focus on practical things like cup holders and not the exact millimeter length of a shock tube.
- Realize lighting matters and so does sound quality.
- Write in a natural, conversational way for an audience who spends their days in work boots, not reading a dictionary.
- Don’t dwell on unimportant details that may only annoy you.
- Get the idea that video thumbnails matter a lot.
- Realize the world is changing and written work doesn’t pay a $1000 for 500 words anymore.
- Write in plain English and without Ai
- Finally, know that the “+” in our name doesn’t mean “and.” It literally is a plus sign. Plus. Don’t mess that up.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is someone who understands the truck culture, gets a thrill out of covering breaking news, understands that Publisher guy Tim is pretty freakin’ driven so he expects you to be too and doesn’t day dream about the chances of a brown Miata wagon coming on the market. You should be a journalist first, be good with mentioning sponsors during a vehicle review (the new world of business) and want to travel for the vehicle not because of the location or because of some relationship building exercise.
Pay
The almighty question, how much will I get paid? This position will start as part-time at $2,000 – $3,000 per month depending on work produced. It is NOT a salary position. It is paid by work produced like a freelance role and terms will be discussed. Yes, it is easy to reach targets and yes, I expect you to reach those targets each month. This isn’t rocket science.
It is expected this position will grow into a full-time role with pay in the $50-60k a year range. If you find yourself still part-time after a year, then, well, dammit I’ll just have to figure out what the hell went wrong. Our outlet is growing quickly and we expect you to grow quickly as well.
