There’s been a rumor circulating online for a few years that a Ram 7.2L Cummins diesel engine will be in HD trucks. Ram just officially killed that rumor.

What’s the Ram 7.2L Cummins diesel rumor?

The rumor began a few years ago when “insiders” shared details that a new Cummins engine was in development and headed for Ram HD trucks starting in the 2027 model year.

This engine was officially announced by Cummins later as the “7.2 L B7.2 diesel engine.” However, it was also announced it would be for “medium-duty commercial engine lineup (for buses, utility trucks, delivery vehicles, vocational trucks, etc.).”

The announcement didn’t stop the rumor mill even though it clearly stated the engine wasn’t meant for 2500/3500 trucks.

Viral video speculated on several diesel engines demise

A viral video had its moment of fame with millions of views discussing how every diesel engine from GM, Ford and Ram was on the chopping block to be replaced with a larger displacement engine.

It said all of this news was “confirmed.”

Turns out none of the news is confirmed and, at the time of this post, none of these engines are going to replace those found in the popular heavy-duty diesel trucks.

Why the 2027 model year?

The 2027 model year is the next round of level three emissions requirements and represents further changes to diesel engines in a few ways.

Many people are speculating this will mean all the automakers and engine manufacturers will need to replace their current diesel engines.

The changes include longer life expectancy which means longer warranty periods and efforts to make removing emissions equipment more difficult.

Under the revised EPA emissions regulations (40 CFR § 1036.120) for heavy-duty engines (including diesel), manufacturers must provide a longer federal emission-related warranty covering emissions control components. This warranty must cover all components whose failure would increase emissions of any regulated pollutant (including criteria pollutants like NOx and particulates).

Minimum Warranty Periods for MY 2027 and Later

For heavy-duty diesel engines and vehicles (by primary intended service class):

Service ClassMileage MinimumYears MinimumHours Minimum
Spark-Ignition HD160,000 miles10 years8,000 hours
Light Heavy-Duty Diesel210,000 miles10 years10,000 hours
Medium Heavy-Duty Diesel280,000 miles10 years14,000 hours
Heavy Heavy-Duty Diesel450,000 miles10 years22,000 hours

Currently, the warranty period is for 100,000 miles or 10 years.

Ram 6.7L Cummins lives on?

With the announcement of a 2027 Ram Power Wagon Cummins diesel, the rumor should be shut down of the 7.2L diesel once and for all.

Ram says this truck will be out in the second half of 2026 and will be sold into the following year with the 6.7L Cummins diesel.

That means this engine will not be replaced by the 7.2L Cummins diesel for 2027 model year like the rumors suggest.
