A Cummins Ram HD diesel recall notice has been circulating online, detailing the repair and an emissions certificate you’ll need to prove the work was done.
In case you missed it, the news broke during the holidays Cummins agreed to settle with the Department of Justice for $1.7B over alleged defeat devices.
What’s the Cummins Ram HD diesel recall state?
The generic recall notice has been issued by Chrysler and Ram detailing different model years and how they will be fixed. First, the Chrysler recall is for 2013-2015 Ram 3500 cab chassis and Ram 4500/500 cab chassis trucks with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine.
The notice states these trucks “may release air pollutants that exceed Federal and/or California Oxides of Nitrogen standards.” It states the cause is due to the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system on the truck experiencing degradation.
Owners are advised to bring the truck to their local dealer to replace the SCR system as well as update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This repair should take 3 hours and will be free of charge.
California truck owners will receive a Vehicle Emissions Recall Proof of Correction Form that you must have to register your vehicle with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The second recall is for 2021-2022 Ram 2500, Ram 3500, Ram 3500 cab chassis and Ram 4500/5500 cab chassis trucks all with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine.
This recall states the PCM may not have been installed in the manufacturing process. Owners will need to bring their truck to their local dealer to have the PCM installed as well as making sure the Particulate Matter (PM) sensor and module were also installed. Ram is offering a 12-month warranty period on this repair with unlimited miles.
Like the other recall, you’ll need a certificate of completion if you live in California.
The bottom line
Parts not installed, replacing bad parts and reprogramming the PCM? Those certainly sound like the core reasons why Cummins settled with the EPA for the astronomical amount.
The big question for consumers in states that are compliant with the California Air Resource Board guidelines will be if they need a certificate as well.
And if you deleted your diesel, you’ll definitely run into some issues with this recall since you’ll need to re-install those parts then have the recall completed.
Anyway you look at it, this is going to be a pain in the butt.
