NEW YORK, New York — Last week, Subaru revealed its newest EV: the 2026 Subaru Uncharted. This will be the smallest and most affordable EV offered by the automaker. While we don’t have a lot of specs or the finer details just yet, we did see it in person, and we do know some things. Here’s a quick look at those things.
Also, be sure to check out our full first-look walk around from the reveal event.
It gets than 300 miles of range

In its base form, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted will get more than 300 miles of range. We don’t know how much more, but since the all-wheel drive model will get up to 290 miles of range, we can assume it’ll be more than just 1 or 2 miles over the 300-mile mark. Additionally, Subaru has said the Uncharted can go from 10% to 80% of a charge in about 30 minutes using a fast charger. It’ll have a charging speed of up to 150 kW and it will be equipped with a standard NACS port (aka Tesla charge port).
FWD, say what?

For a manufacturer that prides itself on its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, we thought it was interesting that the 2026 Uncharted will have a base front-wheel-drive model. Presumably, that was to hit the 300-mile-range target, but still. That means Uncharted and BRZ will be the only two Subaru models that don’t have AWD standard. Yes, AWD and X-Mode will be available. In fact, they are standard on the Sport and GT trims. The base Premium FWD trim will be sold in limited numbers and won’t have AWD as an option.
Created in partnership with Toyota

If you think the Uncharted looks a bit like the upcoming Toyota C-HR+ EV that was revealed early this year, you’d be correct. They share a platform, battery and infotainment system – among other things. And, no, Toyota doesn’t own Subaru, but Toyota does have about a 20% stake in Subaru. Thus, this is just one of a few vehicles that Subaru and Toyota partner up on. Others include the BRZ and Solterra. However, 2026 Subaru Uncharted is differentiated from the C-HR+ because it does have a Subaru-tuned suspension and Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD as well as unique front and rear designs. Ironically, the C-HR+ will be AWD only.
Delivers 221 to 338 horsepower depending on powertrain

In its FWD form, the 2026 Uncharted will have just a single motor on the front axle and, thus, pushes out just 221 horsepower. However, with the dual-motor AWD model, you’ll see it deliver 338 horsepower. Subaru is quick to point out that this more horsepower than you’ll get from its primary competitors, the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV, which both max out at 201 horsepower.
No frunk for you!

With the battery fitting underneath most EVs like a skateboard, you have a lot of space freed up in the front compartment that once was occupied by an engine. So, a lot of EVs turn that into cargo space, creating a front trunk – or frunk for short. But a quick look under the hood of the 2026 Subaru Uncharted reveals a bunch of electrical bits and, alas, no frunk.
2026 Subaru Uncharted gets a 14-inch infotainment screen

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted has a simplistic tech-forward design. The first thing you’ll notice when sitting behind the wheel are the dual screens – one for your gauge cluster and the other for infotainment. The infotainment screen is a whopping 14 inches and essentially takes over the dash. It will have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and though the press release doesn’t say it, the operating system comes from Toyota.
Dual wireless phone chargers are standard

This could be a controversial move from Subaru, but this new EV has a pair of wireless chargers up front for the driver’s and passenger’s phone. While that’s nice in theory, wireless chargers generally don’t work well, and during our in-person look we didn’t see any USB charge ports up front. So, if you actually want to charge your phone more than a trickle and keep it from overheating, you’ll have to commandeer the pair of USB-C ports in the rear.
2026 Subaru Uncharted will be available early next year

We don’t have a specific date, but Subaru says the Uncharted will go on sale “early next year.” That could be anywhere from January to April. We also don’t have pricing information. However, considering that the larger Subaru Solterra starts at about $39k, we anticipate that the 2026 Uncharted will start at or under $35k. Keep in mind that both the Solterra and Uncharted will be built in Toyota’s Motomachi plant in Japan, so President Trump’s tariffs could have prices of both vehicles increasing.
