Esterdahl kicks things off by discussing the latest news from General Motors on its midsize truck pricing, specifically on the new GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1. This special edition version of the GMC Canyon has a starting MSRP of $63k. For Esterdahl, that’s a lot of money — especially considering that’s more than both the 2022 Toyota Tundra and 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost has has bought for the channel over the past couple years. In fact, it is only $6k less than the Chevy Silverado High Country Esterdahl is reviewing this week.
Ciminillo counters with the average transaction price of all vehicles being $45k, and while $63k is more than that, she does make a solid point that the pricing isn’t so out there for average truck sales.
Next Esterdahl puts up the curb weight, capacities and trailering spec chart for the new 2023 GMC Canyon and points out the max payload for the GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1 is a paltry 1,010 pounds. This means, you can only add 1,010 pounds of people and cargo into the truck before it is maxed out.
Ciminillo points out that a 1,010 pounds is most likely just “five dudes.”
Then, Esterdahl and Ciminillo discuss the lack of midsize work truck options with both the GMC and Chevy midsize trucks dropping the work truck trims. Esterdahl theorizes the midsize vans are really the new midsize work truck. Ciminillo shares her experiences of what kinds of work vehicles she sees in Chicago.
