Somehow, Kia is still underrated. The company has spent years improving its vehicles, refining its designs, and proving it can compete with just about anybody in the mainstream market. Yet there are still people who seem genuinely surprised when a Kia turns out to be this good.

The Kia K5 is a perfect example. This isn’t the fastest, fanciest, or the most luxurious sedan on the market. But it is a car that makes you wonder why everybody else charges more.

Kia Understands What Buyers Really Want

A lot of automakers seem convinced that buyers are looking for bigger screens, endless features, and ever-higher trim levels. Those things are nice, but most people spend far more time worrying about their monthly payment than they do bragging about their heated seats.

The K5 doesn’t feel stripped down, but it also doesn’t feel like you’re paying for a bunch of things you’ll never use. That’s a difficult balance to strike, but Kia has gotten remarkably good at it.

Nobody is going to fight over who gets stuck in the back seat, and nobody is going to climb out after a long drive feeling like they’ve been punished. That’s not the sort of thing that makes headlines, but it’s exactly the sort of thing owners appreciate after living with a vehicle for a few years.

The Price And The Styling Don’t Match

Look at the K5 and then look at the price. You’ll think somebody made a mistake in your favor. That’s what keeps happening with Kia products. The numbers never seem to line up the way you expect them to, and the K5 is one of the best examples. It’s stylish, a little sporty, and has just enough attitude to stand out without looking like it’s trying too hard.

Inside, a 24-inch panoramic display stretches across the dash looking right out of a luxury sedan. This mild-mannered family sedan even offers red seats and bright green brake calipers. Somebody at Kia decided sedans don’t have to be boring.

I’ve driven plenty of vehicles that cost more and didn’t make nearly as good a first impression. That’s especially true when you consider Kia doesn’t force buyers into expensive trims just to get some style. Even lower trims have the same basic design, which means you don’t have to spend thousands more just to avoid driving something forgettable.

The K5 doesn’t constantly remind you that you were a responsible adult and bought a sensible car. Some affordable vehicles feel like they’re punishing you for making a smart financial decision, but not the K5.

The K5 Lets You Choose Your Priorities

Part of what makes the K5 such a strong value is that Kia recognizes not everyone wants the same thing from a sedan. Some buyers simply want something comfortable, efficient, and affordable. Others want a little personality mixed into their daily commute.

If your goal is saving money on fuel, then the standard engine makes a lot of sense. You’ll spend less time at the gas station and have a little more cash in your wallet.

I’d spend the extra money and get the turbocharged GT. I like to drive, and the added power gives the K5 a personality that better matches its styling. It’s more responsive, more engaging, and simply more fun when the road starts to curve a little.

Why Kia Is Still So Underrated

The K5 shows why writing off Kia as an inferior brand is a mistake. It’s comfortable, practical, stylish, reasonably fun to drive, and priced to fit real budgets. That’s a combination that’s hard to find as prices continue to rise.

The funny thing about the K5 is that there isn’t one thing that makes it special. Plenty of cars have attractive styling. Plenty of cars have comfortable interiors. Plenty of cars get good fuel economy.

What Kia has managed to do is put all of those things together without making buyers feel like they’re overpaying. That’s why the K5 works so well, and it’s why I keep coming back to the same question every time I drive one. How is Kia charging so little for this?

Kia keeps building vehicles that make people feel like they got a good deal. The K5 may be one of the best examples of that philosophy, and that’s exactly why it deserves more attention than it gets.
