The shift from a proven V8 to a twin-turbo V6 brought big capability gains, but also introduced a wave of 2021–2026 Toyota Tundra reliability concerns owners are still sorting through.

Looking through reliability reports from NHTSA.gov, Consumer Reports, online forums and various groups, here are the last 5 years of the Toyota Tundra for those shopping for new or used trucks.

2021 Stands Apart as the Last “Old School” Tundra

The 2021 Toyota Tundra represents the end of an era. Powered by the long-running 5.7L V8, it avoided the widespread issues tied to the newer generation. While it wasn’t the most modern truck in the segment, it delivered predictable reliability and fewer systemic complaints compared to what followed.

For shoppers, it remains the benchmark for “known quantity” durability in this lineup.

Twin-Turbo V6 Engine Failures Drive 2021-2026 Toyota Tundra Reliability Concerns

The most serious issue affecting 2022–2024 trucks centers on the 3.4L twin-turbo V6. A major recall identified machining debris inside certain engines that could lead to knocking, rough running, loss of power or complete failure. In many cases, the fix has been full engine replacement.

This problem has become the defining reliability story for the current-generation Tundra. While not every truck failed (they did get recalled), the severity of the failure and the scale of the recall have raised concerns among owners and prospective buyers alike.

Recalls Expand as Investigation Continues

What started as a targeted recall grew as more trucks were evaluated. Additional filings expanded coverage across 2022–2024 models, with tens of thousands of trucks included. Toyota has indicated that some later engines received updated manufacturing processes, but questions remain about consistency across production years.

Hybrid models were excluded from certain recalls, with Toyota noting their ability to maintain limited drivability. That decision has drawn scrutiny, including legal challenges from owners who argue the issue may not be isolated to non-hybrid trucks.

Transmission, Electronics and Software Add to Issues

Beyond the engine, several other recalls and technical problems have surfaced. A transmission-related recall addressed a condition where the truck could move unexpectedly while in neutral, requiring a software update.

Additional recalls have focused on backup camera failures and multimedia system glitches, including screens going black or freezing on camera views. These issues highlight the increasing role of software and electronics in modern trucks and the growing pains that come with it.

Everyday Owner Complaints Still Persist

Outside of recalls, owners have reported a range of real-world issues. These include throttle hesitation or “dead pedal” behavior, excessive front tire wear, interior trim problems, seat comfort failures, brake noise and inconsistent HVAC performance.

Some 2025 models appear to show incremental improvements in build quality and refinement, but complaints about throttle response and drivability have not completely disappeared.

Taken together, the 2022–2026 Toyota Tundra reflects a truck in transition one that delivers modern performance and efficiency gains, but at the cost of the bulletproof reputation that defined earlier generations.
