Jeep just dropped a teaser and a short statement, but honestly, that is all it takes to get Trailhawk fans paying attention again. The off-road-focused Grand Cherokee is officially coming back later this year, and even with limited details, there is plenty to unpack.

Here are five key takeaways about the return of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk.

The Trailhawk Name Still Means Serious Off-Road Intent

Jeep calling this a “Trail Rated” model speaks to how the brand views the Trailhawk model. To earn the “Trail Rated” badge, a Jeep must meet minimum criteria in five key areas: traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation, and ground clearance.

The Last Trailhawk Set a Pretty High Bar

The most recent Grand Cherokee Trailhawk came exclusively as a 4xe plug-in hybrid, and it was no slouch, at least on paper:

  • 375 horsepower
  • 470 lb-ft of torque
  • Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with 2-speed transfer case and 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio
  • Rear electronic limited-slip differential
  • Selec-Terrain traction management system
  • Selec-Speed Control
  • 10.9 inches of ground clearance
  • 24 inches of water fording capability
  • 47.4:1 crawl ratio
  • An estimated 25 miles of all-electric range

It also packed serious off-road credentials with the Quadra-Lift air suspension, offering up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance.

I tested one on my favorite proving grounds and feel like the bones were there, but the 4xe system paired with the air suspension felt like too much tech in an off-roader.

Powertrain Is the Big Question Mark

Jeep has not said a word about what is under the hood this time, and that is where things get interesting.

The last Trailhawk was tied to the now-discontinued 4xe system. A return to that system seems highly unlikely, especially as brands like Ram bring back the HEMI V8 to popular models.

There is also some history here. When the current-generation Grand Cherokee first launched as a 2022 model, Trailhawk models were associated with HEMI V8 power and the 4xe system. 4xe models had blue tow hooks and a blue “Trailhawk” accent on the hood. HEMI-powered Trailhawks had red tow hooks and a red hood accent, as seen in the teaser image.

This Is Part of a Bigger Jeep Product Push

The return of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is not happening in a vacuum. This is clearly part of a much larger push from Jeep to refocus the brand around what it does best: capability, heritage, and purpose-built vehicles.

This lines up with Jeep leaning into milestone moments. With the brand celebrating its 85th anniversary, expect more heritage-driven products, special editions, and capability-focused trims. The Trailhawk is exactly the kind of model that reinforces Jeep’s legacy while still pushing forward with new tech and powertrain strategies.

Timing Points to a 2027 Model-Year Arrival

Jeep says the Trailhawk is coming later this year, which likely lines it up as a 2027 model.

That gives Jeep time to reveal full specs, powertrain details, and where it fits in the Grand Cherokee lineup. It also suggests we could see it debut at a major auto show or Jeep-specific event before hitting dealer lots.

Final Thoughts

Jeep did not give us much, but the return of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is a big deal. This is one of the few midsize SUVs that blends real off-road capability with daily usability, and the last version proved just how far Jeep was willing to push that formula.

Without much detail, it is hard to get too excited, but Trailhawk is back, and that is a win for anyone who actually uses their SUV the way Jeep intended.
