2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss 1

A 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss was spied driving around with camouflage covering up many things except the wild new spider web wheels and a new exhaust layout.

We also expect new V8 engine changes.

Here is what our spy photographer had to say.

Trail-Ready Clearance

While the front bumper doesn’t have the aggressive tire cutaways that make the Silverado ZR2 its top-tier trail champion, this prototype clearly shows that ample clearance and healthy approach angles are part of this trucks design brief.  There is nothing extraneous hanging below the front bumper, and there appears to be evidence of tow hooks and a healthy front skid plate hiding beneath its front-end camouflage.  A generous ride-height is noticeable, likely at least matching the two-inch factory lift applied to the current-generation Silverado 1500 Trail Boss.

Spider Web Wheel Design

This new Trail Boss prototype showcases a new wheel design—a striking spider-web-weave design.  The new wheels have some similarities to a new wheel design found on prototypes for the 2027 Silverado 1500 ZR2, but these Trail Boss wheels have their own unique design—and they’re awesome.

Territory MTs in Place

This test truck maintains the off-road rubber found on the current Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss—the chunky Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, fitted to its top off-road trucks.  We’ve revealed that the next Silverado ZR2 is testing with 35-inch tires—proving that GM has addressed the design shortcomings that limited tire size to 33-inches.  That upgrade suggests that the Silverado’s platform has been given a thorough going-over in the course of its redesign, so we should expect competitive upgrades across all of its trim levels.  That said, the Territory MTs on this Trail Boss prototype maintain the current model’s 275/65R18 size.

New V8 engines?

As I stated with the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 spy photos, there will be one of the most significant engine overhauls in years. Expected for 2027:

GM has confirmed that the new V8s will include hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology, designed to meet the stricter 2027–2032 EPA emissions rules. These engines are expected to feature modern efficiency technologies such as cylinder deactivation, lightweight oils, auto start-stop, and potentially gasoline particulate filters.

GM is also investing an additional $300 million to upgrade its Michigan transmission plant, signaling ongoing refinement of its 10-speed automatic — including a new valve body to address previous rear-wheel lockup issues.

When will the new 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 debut?

It should debut next Spring. (Photo courtesy Glenn Paulina)

If they follow the script of years past, the new 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss should debut in the Spring of 2026 and be on sale in the Fall of 2026.

It could have a slow roll out of some of the lower trim models with GM prioritizing the higher-end builds to start with like the High Country and ZR2.
