Ford recall

Nearly 175,000 Ford vehicles are being recalled after a federal safety investigation found that a piece of trim could fly off while driving — an unnerving possibility for any driver glancing in the rearview mirror.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain Ford SUVs and trucks may have been built with improperly secured clips that can cause the moonroof wind deflector to detach from the vehicle. The issue is similar to an earlier recall affecting the Ford Flex, in which B-pillar trim pieces could separate while driving.

This latest recall covers 174,853 vehicles in total, including 2021–2022 Ford Expedition (34,573 units) and Lincoln Navigator (8,969 units) SUVs, as well as 2021–2023 Ford F-150 pickups (91,850 units). It also affects 39,461 examples of the Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty models. The problem stems from moonroof components supplied by Webasto, where clips on the wind deflector’s lower attachment strip may not be properly fastened to the moonroof frame’s retention tabs. If those clips fail, the deflector can detach and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford first noticed the issue in May while investigating detached B-pillar trim on the Explorer. That led the company to examine other areas where similar attachment issues could occur. Dealers will begin receiving official recall notices on October 30, and owners can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Ford’s recall website to see if their vehicle is affected.

Repairs are expected to begin quickly. Ford plans to notify owners between November 3 and 7, instructing them to bring their vehicles to dealerships for inspection. Dealers will replace the faulty clips and repair or replace the moonroof wind deflector as needed, free of charge.

The moonroof recall is just the latest in a string of quality-related actions from Ford.
