Some Ram 1500 RHO Trucks Can’t Go Faster than 98 MPH And That’s a Big Problem

Imagine buying a performance sport truck like the Ram 1500 RHO and suddenly you can’t go faster than 98 MPH, much slower than advertised.

Turns out, it really got owners fired up and it will cost Stellantis some money to fix this problem.

Ram 1500 RHO trucks have a new speed limit?

The advertised top speed for a Ram 1500 RHO is actually 118 MPH and when you are racing in the dunes, well you want all that God Bless America speed that you paid for.

Who wouldn’t want to make full use of the high-output inline 6 Hurricane engine with 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque with a built-in launch button? The RHO can do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and has a built-in page to log your drag racing times.

This is THE current badass truck from Ram until the TRX makes its return and yet it got limited to 98 MPH recently causing an uproar thanks to a really bizarre mistake.

The official statement from Stellantis:

“The performance and capability of every Stellantis vehicle are central to our commitment to customers. In this instance, a small number of North American Ram RHO trucks were inadvertently programmed with engine software intended for export models. The software was installed alongside routine updates performed during dealership servicing. As a result, these customer vehicles were limited to a top speed of 98 mph, below the advertised specification for the North American market. While this reduced top speed complies with regulatory requirements in certain international markets, it is not intended for North American Ram RHO high-performance trucks.

Stellantis will issue a rapid service update (RSU) to recalibrate the engine software in affected vehicles. Expert technicians will travel to affected customers to perform the RSU at their convenience. The RSU will update the engine management software and restore the intended top speed of 118 mph. Stellantis will contact affected customers directly to inform them of the corrective action and to schedule a technician appointment.

In the interim, customers may continue to operate their vehicles. As part of our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, Stellantis will offer a complimentary oil change at participating dealerships to help offset any inconvenience. The company is conducting a thorough review of the technical error that led to the installation of incorrect software on these vehicles.

While the RSU will restore the top speed of North American Ram RHO trucks, Stellantis reminds all drivers to obey posted speed limits and drive responsibly.”

On August 15, 2025, Ram issued an updated statement:

Correction Notice – Ram RHO Top Speed Statement

“In our original statement issued on August 8, 2025, Stellantis noted it would fly technicians to affected Ram RHO customers to perform a Rapid Service Update (RSU) on trucks that were inadvertently programmed with engine software intended for export models.

We’re pleased to share that Stellantis engineers have established the necessary software solution to complete the RSU through the Ram dealer network, allowing for a faster resolution. Customers will now be able to complete the software update and receive their complimentary oil change in a single visit to their local dealer.

We hope this update is welcome news to our customers as we continue working with urgency to deliver the performance they expect from Ram.”

The bottom line

Basically, someone screwed up and pushed out the wrong software setting on these trucks limiting their speed to 98 MPH that you’d find in other countries. And now, Stellantis has to pay for a person to fly into dealerships across the country to fix these trucks one by one.

This issue caused many RHO owners a lot of frustration and trips to the dealer where service managers had no idea how to respond for a month while a fix was sorted out by corporate. One of these service managers, according to various forums like Ram-RHO.com basically said too bad, so sad.

Lemon law conversations started as well as buy back discussions and you have owners who are now even more leery of going to the dealership for service. Imagine getting an oil change and leaving with a truck that now goes 20 MPH slower! Yeah, that’s not ok.

I can confirm I "tested" my RHO and I'm not affected by this "issue."
