After 15 years without a major redesign, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Platinum is now on the market with new looks, new powertrain, new interior, new safety equipment, etc. It is completely changed from the prior model.
Exterior and design
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner mirrors much of the front-end looks from the redesigned 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Starting from the second-row doors and backwards, the 4Runner mixes traditional styling features such as the wide-open rear cargo area and a roll-down window with new styling lines.
For the 2025 4Runner Platinum it features a bold front grille finished in dark chrome, unique black exterior styling, upgraded seats with real leather, heated second-row seats, power running boards, a head-up display and a standard tow tech package.
Overall, compared to the other nine trims, it is clearly the more luxury version of the 4Runner.

Interior comfort and technology
Stepping inside, the Platinum trim showcases a well-designed interior with premium materials and modern styling. The seats, in our test model, feature a striking deep blue upholstery with brown-orange stitching.
While other brands use piano black to add a luxury feel, the 4Runner Platinum opts for more plastic trim which should hold up better to scratches.
A 14-inch touchscreen sits prominently in the center console, complemented by a digital display cluster.
The wireless charger, multiple drive mode controls, and well-placed cupholders contribute to a user-friendly interior. The vehicle’s new electrical architecture allows for seamless remote start functionality and improved adaptive cruise control response times.
Second-row experience
The second row in the Platinum trim provides ample legroom for passengers, though it does have a unique stadium-style seating setup, making the rear seats slightly elevated compared to the front.
This design may offer better visibility for passengers but could feel a bit unconventional for some. The grab handles are also positioned differently than in previous models, requiring a bit of adjustment to use comfortably.
The rear doors open wide, almost to a full 90 degrees, allowing for easy entry and exit, though the higher seating position due to the solid axle design means occupants might need to twist slightly when getting out. It was the most awkward experience I’ve had in a while getting into the second row.

Cargo space and utility
Moving to the cargo area, the 4Runner Platinum offers a spacious storage compartment like prior generations.
Underfloor storage provides additional utility, and a 2400-watt power outlet is available for running appliances, making it ideal for camping and tailgating.
The tailgate also features a kick-activated function for added convenience.
Performance and capability
Under the hood, the Platinum trim comes standard with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, delivering 317 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque at just 1,700 RPM mated to an 8-speed transmission. This replaces the outgoing 4.0-liter V-6 engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner also comes with a non-hybrid, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission producing 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.
Off-road and on the pavement, you can really tell the difference between the hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains. The hybrid feels much more powerful and has a smoother power delivery off the line. It also makes the outgoing 4.0-liter, V-6 feel ancient.
The i-Force Max hybrid powertrain has an EPA rating of 23 MPG city, 24 MPG highway, and 23 MPG combined. It comes only in full-time four-wheel drive and has a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.
A drawback for many though, is the scant amount of payload. The Platinum model we drove had just 895 pounds of payload. This means four 200-pound guys would nearly max out the 4Runner.
Our take on the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Platinum
With a starting price of around $65,000, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Platinum is undeniably a premium offering. While it may not be the go-to choice for hardcore off-roaders, it provides a luxurious and highly capable driving experience for those who want a well-rounded body-on-frame SUV. If you’re looking for a high-end 4Runner that still retains ruggedness while offering modern conveniences, the Platinum trim is worth serious consideration.
