If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a million times: I love my TikTok followers. When you wade through the trolls, they’re actually very supportive and engaged – and they ask excellent questions. Like when I recently had the 2023 Toyota 4Runner, and someone asked what’s actually new since it was launched in (gasp!) 2010.

Yep, this current generation of 4Runner is a teenager, and looks remarkably good for its age. It certainly is low tech, and the interior is straight out of 2010, but there are some relatively big changes that have happened over the years.

Toyota 4Runner what’s new
While there have been a number of special editions added through the years – including the 2023 40thAnniversary Special edition –what’s new on the Toyota 4Runner is a bare minimum. Here are some of the bigger highlights:
- 2014: 4Runner got a facelift with a revised front and rear fascia as well as updated interior.
- 2015: TRD Pro trim was available in the U.S.
- 2020: Toyota’s TSS-P safety suite became standard and wired-in Apple CarPlay/Android auto was added.
- 2021: LED headlights are available for all trims.
- 2022: Push-button start becomes standard for all trims.
- 2023: Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard for all trims.
The bottom line
The Toyota 4Runner is a cult classic, and loyalists aren’t really interested in what’s new. They want the classic analog gauges and old school feel. I mean, Toyota consistently sells more than 120k 4Runners a year, which is more than some automakers sell of their entire lineup in a year. So, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
