New Nissan truck

A recent news report suggests a new Nissan electric truck could be very similar to the Fisker Alaska electric truck unveiled last year.

New Nissan electric truck?

The report from Reuters cites people with knowledge of an ongoing negotiation between the two companies.

Nissan will invest $400 million into Fisker, a financial lifeline for electric startup. In return, Fisker will share its technology with Nissan. Specifically, Nissan will gain access to the Fisker Alaska platform and battery technology. This will cut Nissan’s development time on EVs.

Reuters also reports Nissan will help Fisker build the Alaska truck as well as develop its own version of the truck. Both trucks could be built on the same assembly line.

What is a Fisker Alaska truck?

If you are like me, you are probably scratching your head when you hear “Fisker Alaska.”

The truck was unveiled at a Fisker Product Vision Day on August 3, 2023. Fisker revealed additional details like the size, range and 0-60 times.

According to a press release, the Fisker Alaska will be 17.4-feet long, which translates into being about two inches shorter than the current Nissan Frontier crew cab truck. It will be offered in two different battery packs: 75 kWh and 113 kWh. These battery packs will translate into 230-340 miles of range, depending on the size you choose. Fisker says 0-60 times will vary from 3.9 to 6.2 seconds.

Other features the truck will have include a big gulp cupholder, a cowboy hat holder, cockpit storage for work gloves, a large center armrest with storage for flashlights and pens, and a passenger tray with a tablet holder.

The truck will come with either 20- or 22-inch wheels.

Fisker says customers can reserve the Alaska for $250.

The bottom line

Nissan has been pivoting more to EVs and has made room for new EV SUV through ending the full-size Titan truck. We speculated early last year that Nissan might be looking to bring an electric truck to market. However, the EV market has cooled in recent months, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
