There is a new 2020-2024 Chevy Silverado HD recall due to the power-unlatching tailgate failing. This affects GMC Sierra HD trucks, too.
2024 Chevy Silverado HD recall for tailgates opening
The General Motors recall number N232426400 addresses the defect caused by water coming into the tailgate, causing them to fail. This recall is for both MultiPro and MultiFlex tailgates.
According to the recall information posted on GM-Trucks.com, the issue is due to water getting into the tailgate.
There are two drain holes located at the top of the tailgate meant to prevent water from collecting, however, they are doing the opposite. Apparently, water is instead getting into the tailgate through these holes and is collecting inside the tailgate.
The water collecting in the tailgate can cause the gate-release switch to short circuit causing the tailgate to unlatch unexpectedly. This can cause all sorts of issues like damaging another vehicle, unsecured cargo falling on the ground while parked and while driving.
The issue isn’t new and GM issued a Technical Service Bulletin 23-NA-112 addressing it. That TSB advised dealership technicians to replace the main tailgate switch as well as another part inside the tailgate. It also included Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models.
This new recall mandates all affected Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks need to be fixed with new parts and not just when owners stop by their dealership with a complaint that was addressed by the TSB.
Owners should consult their local dealership for a repair and to learn when parts are available. If you have the app installed for your truck, you should have gotten a notification.
The bottom line
A nagging issue for these trucks hopefully will be finally be resolved after this recall.
