Looking over the specs, a few things stand out.
First, octane requirement. People hear a turbocharged engine and think premium fuel only. That’s just not the case. Nor is it the case when you use premium you’ll see massive gains in horsepower, torque or even fuel economy. I’ve spoken to far too many engineers from different brands who all say the same thing. You’ll see slight gains (think 10-20 horsepower), but it’s not worth the upcharge.
Second, the length is the same as the outgoing 2023 model. Why? It has to fit into a garage. That’s a HUGE part of the reason people buy midsize trucks. Now if you don’t care about that, you can buy the double cab model with the 6-foot bed.
Third, the chart shows the horsepower and torque for the hybrid powertrain, but the fuel economy numbers are for the gas only models. The fact is, the hybrid, at the time of this writing, isn’t out yet and Toyota hasn’t provided its estimated EPA fuel economy numbers.
Fourth, pricing is up quite a bit. While the XtraCab Prerunner starts at a low $31k, the rest of the prices see a jump. For example, the 2023 TRD Sport and TRD Off Road models were around the mid-$35k mark, and now both are near $40k with the 4WD models coming in more than that mark. Also, the 2023 Limited starts at $41,355 while the 2024 Limited model starts at $52,100. That’s a big jump.
Finally, let’s talk about fuel economy. The best the 2WD model of the 2023 Tacoma could muster was 19 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. For the 2024, the best 2WD fuel economy is 21 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. This translates into a 2 MPG jump. Many people will point to that number and wonder why go turbo if that’s the best Toyota could do for MPG. Don’t be fooled into this narrow thinking. As our first drive review showed, the performance is night and day better.
The bottom line
Better MPG, better engine performance, same size, better features and more trims tailored to customer needs. Sure there are always going to be those who preferred the older model, but time marches on, and so should you.
