safest full-size truck

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) finally completed its testing of the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra, and the results impressive. The Tundra now stands alone as the only truck to get the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022, which makes it the safest full-size truck currently on the market.

As we previously reported, the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 both get Top Safety Pick designations for 2022. The only other full-size truck to win a TSP+ award was the Ram 1500 back in 2019 – but that was before the headlight and passenger side tests got tougher.

Toyota Tundra safety

Though the IIHS safety tests have been run since 2006, full-size trucks didn’t start being tested until 2008. At that time, the Toyota Tundra was the only truck to get a Top Safety Pick designation. Over the years, as the tests have gotten stricter, the Tundra has fallen off the list.

But it’s back with a vengeance for 2022, getting Good crash test ratings across the board for the crew cab model. Furthermore, the headlights get either good or Acceptable ratings on every trim – and that’s what pushed Tundra to the top.

To get the TSP+ designation, Good or Acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims. And that’s what kept the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 off the list.

The bottom line on the safest full-size truck

As full-size trucks become more than work trucks, it’s important to consider safety before plunking down a big chunk of change for a family hauler. Clearly Toyota wanted to go the extra mile with its all-new truck, and it paid off with dividends since the crew cab Tundra is the safest full-size truck you can buy – in any grade.
