What is the 2022 Toyota Tundra fuel economy like? Good question. Lots of new owners are reporting crazy low MPGs, which seems weird after we were able to beat the advertised fuel economy recently.
Do EPA numbers hold water?
When manufacturers tout fuel economy numbers we all shake our heads and say, “Yeah, right!” because we know those tests are done at very steady speeds in controlled environments. Once you buy the truck, you find out that your foot is either made of lead or the truck’s computer doesn’t know how to, well, compute. Or at least it can seem that way. This is why Publisher Tim Esterdahl likes to take vehicles out on the road in different locations across the country to test the real-world MPG.
2022 Toyota Tundra fuel economy killers
In this video, Esterdahl was in the snowy Midwest, and he’s testing the 2022 Tundra with different fuel qualities, different drivers and different road conditions. For a while, the roads are pretty bad and he has to turn on the 4-wheel drive. After a while, he switches to premium fuel to see what difference that makes for the 2022 Tundra fuel economy. Next, he lets Managing Editor Jill Ciminillo drive (or she takes over, more likely), and finally, he takes the truck to get a lift kit and running boards installed and tests the fuel economy again after that.
