Pickup trucks are growing in popularity for law enforcement in rural areas, including National Parks services and border patrol agencies. Now, there’s another choice on the market with the Chevy Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV), joining the Tahoe PPV and competing with the Ford F-150.
The Silverado PPV will share a lot of similarities with its Tahoe sibling, including the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, 6-piston Brembo front brake calipers and 16-inch rotors.
While equipped for high speeds, the Silverado PPV is also meant to fulfill trailering needs for mounted and marine divisions, thus it also has a max tow rating of 9,300 pounds.
If the law enforcement agencies have off-road needs, and there is no longer the need for police highway pursuit, the Silverado PPV has them covered with Rancho shocks, locking rear differential and a skid plate. A 2-inch lifted suspension is also available, which enables a 11.35 inches of ground clearance and a 25.9-degree approach angle.
Since different agencies have different needs, there are a number available upfits, including:
- Auxiliary wiring circuits for easy installation of wiring to connect the truck’s horn and siren.
- Surveillance Mode circuit that allows an upfitter to easily install lighting control.
- Five upfitter switches for simple linking to the controls used most frequently.
- Optional deletion of front center seat.
- LED or halogen spot lamps.
The Silverado will also be equipped with numerous safety, comfort and convenience features, including things like push-button start, easy-to-clean vinyl flooring, configurable storage options, a tri-fold bed cover for weatherproof storage, adaptive cruise control and rear park assist.
The bottom line on the Silverado PPV
Not every law enforcement agency needs a super-fast police cruiser to chase down the bad guys. Some will have to tow a horse trailer or perform a rescue in a secluded area. So, a Police Pursuit Vehicle that has the option of being fast as well as capable makes a lot of sense.
Besides, Ford Motor Co. has had its F-150 Police Responder in the market for a few years now. Time to catch up, Chevy!
