Having recently driven the 2022 Ford Maverick myself, both the hybrid and gas all-wheel versions, I was very interested to see how Publisher Tim Esterdahl would do with this Maverick hybrid fuel economy test. Especially considering I don’t “drive boring” as Esterdahl would say.
What do you have to do to beat EPA?
Drive like Frank. Or, um, slow and steady. Not like me. And if you want to get really fancy you can fill up with premium fuel and drive with the wind to your back. You can’t punch it — very gradually building speed is the key. It’s called hypermiling, and it can be boring. But you can also end up beating those EPA numbers and feeling quite pleased with yourself in the end. (See video for Esterdahl’s reaction.)
2022 Ford Maverick hybrid fuel economy in the real world
Because the truck is a hybrid, you can drive around town without using much gas, and your batteries recharge as you’re driving on the highway. I don’t really have a “town” to drive around so I drove mostly highway miles, picked up over 500 pounds of compost and still got almost 40 MPG in the hybrid, which impressed me. Esterdahl’s driving an empty truck (save him and his passenger Frank), and he puts in some city miles, which helps to even things out.
So, just what kind of MPG does he get? You’ll have to watch this 2022 Maverick fuel economy test to find out. And if all you really want are the numbers, we won’t blame you if you skip to the end.

I have the Ecoboost motor in the XLT FX4 4K maverick and I get around 30 to 31 mpg 95% of the time. So I am more than happy with it. Also I get that on Regular not premium gas
