A few weeks back, Publisher Tim Esterdahl talked about some of the quirks he experienced when trying to set up the infotainment system in his new 2022 Tundra. Well, after a couple of videos, emails and a nice chat with some engineers at Toyota, Esterdahl has some exclusive news about the 2022 Tundra infotainment update coming in February.
2022 Tundra infotainment update: goodbye guest mode
Right now, when Esterdahl gets into his truck and turns it on, the infotainment system asks him to choose an account, either his own or a Guest account. If he can’t log in to his own for some reason, the guest account prompt box stays up on the screen, covering anything that would be useful, including the navigation. This may not seem like a big deal. One should know their pin and be able to get rid of that pretty quick, right? Wrong.
The thinking behind the guest mode being activated automatically was for valet or fleet purposes. Some people worry about handing their keys to a stranger and wondering if their navigation history and home address will be accessed. And we get that. But it seems a bit overkill for that to be the default when the percentage of time a stranger will be behind the wheel is pretty low.
This confusing guest mode screen will be going away with the 2022 Tundra infotainment update rolling out in February, thanks to Toyota’s dedication to quality and attention to customer’s feedback.
Problem number 2
It seems Toyota didn’t think to make sure profiles would be stored on both key fobs. So, only the primary keyfob is recognized when a driver gets in and tries to select a profile. If Esterdahl gets in with the wrong keyfob he’s out of luck and can’t log in to his profile. These keyfobs are supposed to store up to 3 profiles, and they should both work the same way. Toyota is working hard on fixing this issue!
Personally, I think you should be able to set a profile as primary for each fob so the minute you hop into your truck with your key. It signs you in, and you don’t need to enter a pin or select a profile. Then your significant other could do the same with their key, and everyone would be happy.
No default date/time settings by GPS
The infotainment system has the option to set the vehicle’s date and time by GPS and to auto-update the time when you drive across a time zone, but neither of these is selected by default. Esterdahl is hoping this will be another one of the changes we see in the 2022 Tundra infotainment update.
