Subaru announced that the Forester will get a touch-up for the 2022 model year, including a redesigned front fascia and some new features. The biggest add: Forster gets the new Wilderness trim we recently tested on the Outback.
Into the wild
This will include extra cladding, a front skid plate, bronzy-orange accents and unique chassis suspension components. Added bonus: Ground clearance increases to 9.2 inches.
We loved the Outback Wilderness trim for its water-resistant leatherette seats, bolder stance and washable rear cargo area – we expect we’ll love the same features in the new Forester Wilderness model as well.
A new safety add
While all Subaru models come standard with its EyeSight safety suite, upper trims also add a new feature called “Automatic Emergency Steering.” While this isn’t a “takeover” system, what it will do is assist with steering in conjunction with automatic emergency braking to help avoid collisions at speeds less than 50 mph.
No powertrain changes
The big thing that doesn’t change: the engine. Forester will still be equipped with the 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder Boxer engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. And before you ask: Yes, that also includes the CVT.
And, no, the Forester Wilderness will not get the turbocharged engine we see in the Outback Wilderness. Yet. We can hope it’ll be coming because it’s awesome.
A small price bump
As you would expect, a refresh often increases the price. But Subaru manages to hold the line fairly well, and the base and top Touring trim prices only increase by $400.
Complete pricing for the 2022 Subaru Forester trim lineup is as follows:
| Trim | MSRP + destination ($1,125) |
|---|---|
| Forester | $26,320 |
| Forester Premium | $29,320 |
| Forester Sport | $30,890 |
| Forester Wilderness | $33,945 |
| Forester Limited | $33,000 |
| Forester Touring | $36,420 |
The bottom line on the Subaru Forester
I’ve always been a fan of the Subaru Forester, and in fact, it’s the car I’m recommending my mom buy. So, that should tell you how I really feel. With the new Wilderness trim, an interesting safety add and only a $400 increase, the 2022 Forester will remain high on my list of recommended vehicles.
