If you are curious about the future of the mighty V-8 in the 2025 Ram 1500, the decreased reliance on eight-cylinder engines in full-size trucks should be all the evidence you need that their future might be grim. Other truck makers are already focusing on twin-turbo six-cylinder power plants, and it’s no secret the twin-turbocharged straight-six Hurricane engine is going to be a big part of the future at Stellantis since it promises more power with more efficiency.

We now know the future of Ram’s gas-powered 1500 trucks, and that means a host of new engine options as well as a redesigned interior and exterior. Oh, and to be clear: The V-8 is officially dead.
Rock you like a Hurricane!
Surprise! Ram just announced that the 3.0-liter Hurricane and 3.0-liter Hurricane High Output (H/O) will join the go-to 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 eTorque as the three primary (and only) gasoline power plants for 2025 Ram 1500 trucks. All three engines will be paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hurricane is no slouch in the power department, as the base 3.0-liter hurricane version is rated at 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque, while the High Output version is rated at an impressive 540 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque. As Ram engineers pointed out during the press preview, the top-spec Hurricane engine has 145 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet than the outgoing Hemi V-8 engine.
No details are out yet on EPA-estimated mpg ratings, but you can bet that Stellantis is banking on it being a vast improvement over the outgoing V-8s as they try to meet ever-tightening emission standards.

New top-spec Tungsten trim
Power is nothing without, I don’t know, comfort? Yeah, let’s go with that. Ram is upping the ante big-time with a new ultra-luxury trim that will sit atop the Ram 1500 lineup. The Tungsten trim will get fun stuff like the “Indigo/Sea Salt” interior color palette, which will include new platinum dual-textured metal accents featuring diamond knurling. That all sounds fun, but it also has an upscale suede-wrapped headliner (as well as A/B pillars and visors), plus heated-and-ventilated quilted Natura Plus leather front seats and a 24-way power, plus memory settings and a massage function, power lumbar support and four-way powered headrests for the driver.
Pretty baller. No pricing has been announced, but expect the Tungsten to start well north of the $65,205 Ram is asking for the top-spec (non-TRX) 1500 Limited.
Full lineup of gas-powered 2025 Ram 1500 trims
Petrol-lovers rejoice! Even though the Ram REV and Ramcharger are both coming soon, Stellantis has committed to keeping a full lineup of gas-powered Ram 1500 trim options. That means that you can expect base workhorse models like the Tradesman to remain, but there’s more. Details are minimal so far, but expect the 2025 Ram 1500 also to be available in Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn and Limited models. Ram promises that sport trucks will still be a thing, but sadly, the TRX is no more for 2025.
However, the sporty Ram 1500s will include the Warlock, Rebel and a new “RHO” that will use the 540-horsepower Hurricane powertrain. Ram also teased that the TRX may be back down the road, so stay tuned.

Solid capability and performance
Even though there is no projected V-8 in the lineup, Ram promises you’ll still get a lot of truck capability out of the 1500. Capability specs include a maximum towing capacity of 11,580 pounds, which falls a bit short of the 12,750 pound capability you got with the available 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine with eTorque. Ram cites a maximum payload of 2,300 pounds for the new 1500, and for off-road duty it apparently even has the ability to ford up to 24-inches of water.
It looks fairly tough as well with a 95% steel frame for 2025, a new high-torque rear axle, a larger rear differential, plus an active level four-corner air suspension, and more.

Tech for days
The 2025 Ram 1500 is slated to have some impressive technology upgrades as well. The interior has more screens than an airport (OK, not really, maybe a really small airport). The list includes a standard 12-inch or new optional 14.5-inch touchscreen display that has the Uconnect 5 system and a new, supposedly even more intuitive, user experience. That’s not all though, if you’ve ever thought “my front passenger needs their own screen” you’re in luck. For 2025 there is a 10.25-inch passenger screen that allows three major functions:
- Co-pilot (navigation, device management)
- Entertainment (via HDMI and device mirroring)
- Exterior vehicle cameras
So, side-seat drivers rejoice! Your new Ram will have you covered. Oh, and Ram noted that the screen is not visible to the driver when the vehicle is in motion. The 2025 Ram 1500 will also feature the latest Active Driving Assist (basically Level 2 automated driving capability) as well as Hands-free Driving Assist (Level 2+). Plus, the Ram will have an optional on-board power inverter up to 1.8 kilowatts with two covered outlets located inside the bed.

The bottom line
Turns out that 2025 Ram 1500 build sheet leaked back in July was correct about both the Hurricane engine and the Tungsten trim — among other things. So, the future looks pretty good for Ram 1500 buyers — well, at least for those who don’t care about the lack of a V-8 engine. There is still some conjecture that the “Tornado” name might be used at some point, so perhaps a V-8 might be in the cards down the road.
For now though, the Hurricane is the future for the Ram 1500, and it looks pretty damn impressive. A host of exterior and interior upgrades are coming along with it, which should make the full-size truck market as hot as ever. Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
