Toyota Compact Pickup Teased

A new Toyota compact pickup was teased by the company with a single image. Is the Ford Maverick fighter Toyota fans have been hoping for?

The single image, released by Toyota, shows what appears to be a truck bed lined with LED lights and a truck’s cabin. With the recently redone Toyota Tacoma setting sales records and a new Toyota Tundra refresh not due out until 2028, this means it isn’t likely to be one of those trucks.

What could it be? It could very well be the long rumored return of the Toyota Stout nameplate or another name for a truly compact truck from the automaker.

It is no secret the compact unibody Ford Maverick has been selling well since its debut and people have been clamoring for more competition in that segment. People want a smaller, shorter and cheaper pickup option to counter the larger trucks found on the market today. Even the midsize Tacoma has grown into a size that can be an issue in some areas of the country to daily drive.

The Ford Maverick is basically the same size of a four-door sedan and has the useful bed for hauling various items from mulch, bushes, camping gear, bicycles, etc… Plus, you can comfortably sit 4 adults in the cabin and there are plenty of clever storage spaces for people to utilize.

Plus, the Maverick comes in a hybrid setup rated at 42/35/38 city/highway/combined MPG for FWD and dropping slightly for AWD models. It literally sips gas.

While pricing has risen to around $30,000, the facts are people are buying them up at a staggering pace. Ford sold 155k Mavericks last year, up 18.2 percent, and more than double what they sold for their midsize truck offerings, the Ford Ranger.

The teaser image from Toyota suggests they are finally ready to get into this segment which would be huge for creating more competition and helping to drive down prices. Win, win for consumers.

As much as I want this to be a truck, I think it’s an electric suv, likely the an EV Highlander. I’m attaching a photo that was shared about a year ago

I am not sure this is a pickup, if it is that's a strange place to put rear lights on top of the tailgate, I would smash the sh*t out of those lights, if it's a pickup, loading Lumber or an ATV, my ramps would shatter those lights.

The profile is 100% pickup truck from this angle. The cabin lines drop sharply at the cab rear and the rear window is very small due to it being further away than the rear of the truck (the bed).

Pretty mixed. I’m hearing SUV or truck. Sometimes I look at it and I see Highlander EV. Sometimes I see compact truck.

If it’s a Highlander EV, I couldn’t imagine worse timing for a U.S. launch.

Theory
Those red strip lights could be a tonneau cover for pickup bed.
