We already knew the fully electric Ram REV would be delayed, but we didn’t expect to see the Ram 1500 Ramcharger delayed as well. Now it looks like we won’t see either truck until next year after being pushed back a full year.
Ram 1500 Ramcharger delayed, REV too
According to an Automotive News story, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger will be pushed back to the first quarter of next year due to “extending the quality validation period.”
That quote was from a supplier memo reviewed by Crain’s Detroit Business, an Automotive News affiliate, that also stated the Ram Rev would be delayed.
The fully electric Ram REV is now delayed until the summer of 2027 and will be a 2028 model. Launching that truck has been filled with revisions as an initial launch date was set for 2025 before being pushed to 2026. Then, it was pushed back in favor of launching the Ramcharger first.
“Stellantis continues to reassess its product strategy in North America to align it with our competitive advantage with the Range Extended Ram and in light of slowing consumer demand for half-ton BEV pickups,” spokeswoman Jodi Tinson said in an email to Crain’s Detroit Business. “Our plan ensures we are offering customers a range of trucks with flexible powertrain options that best meet their needs.”
Pushing back these launches once again puts suppliers in a tight spot of trying to plan for future expenses and profit projections with a fast changing environment.
Ramcharger, Ram REV recap
A quick refresher on these trucks.
The Ramcharger is an extended-range EV, utilizing the Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 paired with a 92 kWh battery pack to achieve 690 total miles. The Targeted performance figures include a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, 663 horsepower and over 615 lb.-ft. of torque, up to a best-in-class 14,000 pounds towing with a class 5 hitch and a best-in-class maximum payload capacity of 2,625 pounds.
For the Ram REV, it has a standard driving range of 350 miles with a 168 kWh battery pack.
Pricing has not been announced for either truck.
Our take on the Ramcharger delay
This news doesn’t surprise me one bit. With the change in the administration affecting infrastructure investments, EV tax credits on the chopping block and the ongoing trade war with China affecting the necessary materials to build electric vehicles, I doubt Stellantis will be the only one making announcements like this.
