Buying a subcompact crossover SUV can be a delicate matter for those of us carrying a Y-chromosome. Women adore crossover SUVs because they’re practical. Better yet, they have an elevated seating position, all-wheel drive, endless airbags, easy entry, enough cargo space for children, dogs, yoga mats, reusable grocery bags, and eleven pounds of ethically sourced avocados.

And therein lies the problem.

A man once chose his car because something in his genetic core demanded velocity, noise, and the possibility of becoming tomorrow’s highway fatality statistic. A GTO. A Porsche 911. A Corvette that idles like a bar fight. Cars that smell of gasoline, hot vinyl, and poor impulse control. A subcompact crossover with “Driver Confidence Technology” sounds less like transportation and more like a mandatory seminar run by Human Resources.

How the New Kia Seltos Differs

Enter the redesigned 2027 Kia Seltos, a subcompact crossover, carefully styled to reassure men they haven’t been fully domesticated. Borrowing cues from the larger Kia Telluride and Kia EV9, the Seltos looks tougher, squarer, and vaguely prepared for wilderness adventure than its competition, despite being destined to spend most of its life circling Trader Joe’s parking lots.

This is modern marketing in a nutshell: women buy practicality; men buy self-image. Add black fender cladding and aggressive LEDs, and suddenly Craig from accounting thinks he’s entering the Dakar Rally. And so it goes with the Seltos. It rides on Kia’s K3 platform that also underpins the Kia Niro, K3, and K4; proof that modern vehicles are increasingly interchangeable appliances in different Halloween costumes.

The Kia Seltos lineup now includes a hybrid alongside the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder and turbocharged 1.6-liter. The hybrid is the one to get if your budget allows. It’s smooth, responsive, and delivers immediate power without sounding like it’s negotiating with itself before delivering the goods.

The turbo remains competent, although its eight-speed automatic occasionally prioritizes fuel economy over fun. Ask for revs and it suggests moderation. A tromp on the throttle corrects this. 

Thankfully, Kia wisely avoided making the Seltos hybrid-only like the Toyota RAV4. Americans still enjoy internal combustion because explosions under the hood remain emotionally reassuring and also more affordable. And the outgoing Kia Seltos is among the most affordable new vehicles you can buy in America.

The Inside Story

Inside, the Seltos gets the standard upscale-modern treatment: large touchscreen, head-up display, ambient lighting, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and enough horizontal design elements to resemble a Scandinavian airport lounge.

Thankfully, Kia retained actual buttons and a real volume knob, a courageous act in an industry determined to bury every function inside touchscreen menus.

Abundant Seating; No Frills

The cabin is roomy, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Nothing feels lavish, but nothing feels cheap either. Which is exactly the sort of sensible competence men claim not to want moments before buying it.

How Does It Drive?

Kia provided ICE and hybrid models for testing, although the vehicles were tuned for Europe, so final U.S. horsepower and fuel economy figures remain unofficial.

Still, the verdict is clear: the Seltos succeeds because it avoids fake sportiness. Some rivals corner with the twitchy intensity of caffeinated terriers. The Kia takes a calmer, confident approach, balancing responsive handling with a quiet, comfortable ride over potholes and collapsing infrastructure alike. The ride proved quiet and comfortable, particularly for its class. That said, we were driving the test vehicle in Seoul, South Korea on roads so smooth it put America’s to shame. 

In the final analysis, the 2027 Kia Seltos is nicely balanced, unlike cable news networks.

The new 2027 Kia Seltos is a skillful bit of deception. Thanks to its Kia Telluride-derived design, it tells men they are purchasing freedom, ruggedness, and capability, when what they are really buying is an exceptionally well-packaged transportation device with wireless Apple CarPlay, lots of convenience features, skillful design, and an engaging driving experience. 

Which, frankly, is all that most buyers need.
