The most maligned engineering choice on one of Chevy’s most popular models appears to be on its way out. For 2027, the Chevrolet Equinox is expected to drop its continuously variable transmission on front-wheel-drive models. That alone is a big deal, but it is not the only update worth paying attention to.
Here are the key things to know about the 2027 Chevy Equinox.
Yes, the CVT is Gone

The biggest news for the 2027 Chevy Equinox is the discontinuation of the unpopular CVT in Front Wheel Drive models. Thanks to reports from GM-Trucks.com, among other outlets, we know that GM has published fleet ordering guides that detail major powertrain changes for the upcoming model year.
CVTs have suffered from a poor reputation as of late. While not all CVTs are created equal, those three letters usually translate to a dull driving experience for consumers. Rubber band-like acceleration is the chief complaint of anyone unhappy with the modern CVT.
Welcome the Standard 8-Speed Automatic

The 8-Speed Automatic Transmission (order code RPO GF8), previously only found in AWD models, will become standard equipment across the board.
The switch in transmissions does mean a different final drive ratio. The 2026 model lists a 5.81:1 ratio in the CVT FWD models, and 3.47:1 in 8-speed-equipped AWD models. This could mean a change in EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers as well.
Still No Hybrid Model

No reports list anything new to the engine side of the powertrain configuration, so do not expect anything other than the current 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque.
The torque number should stand out, however, as the FWD models with the CVT were rated at 184 lb-ft for the 2026 model year.
Still vacant from most of Chevy’s lineup, there is no hybrid powertrain listed for 2027. Currently, the only hybrid in Chevy showrooms is the Corvette.
No More Cacti Green

Another notable change is the discontinuation of Cacti Green.
It is not unusual for automakers to shift color options from year to year. The 2026 model year saw the addition of Polar White, for example.
Taking the place of Cacti Green is Autumn Harvest Metallic
Strong Sales Continue

The Equinox is Chevy’s entry into the most competitive segment in the industry, compact SUVs.
2025 was the first year of the fourth-generation Equinox, and buyers responded well. Sales increased by 44% over 2024 model year sales, according to Good Car Bad Car. With nearly 300,000 units sold, the Equinox is an extremely important model to the Bowtie Brand, one that the automaker needs to get right against strong sales leaders of Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, as well as rising stars like the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. All of which offer hybrid options.
Final Thoughts

The big news here is the discontinuation of the CVT. While it is a big win for consumers, we have yet to get power ratings and updated fuel economy numbers. We are also still waiting on a hybrid powertrain option to keep up with practically every other entry in the segment.
This is a welcome change, but perhaps not enough to keep the Equinox competitive in the market for long.
