Intersections may seem harmless. However, these are the spots where everything happens all at once. One moment feels normal. The next, it feels like the ground has dropped out from under you. To better protect yourself while on the road, it is essential that you understand the hidden dangers of intersection accidents.

How Distractions Turn Small Mistakes into Major Problems

You may genuinely believe that you are paying attention while driving. However, distractions can quietly creep up on you when you least expect them. You quickly glance at a text for a split second or fiddle with the AC because the car suddenly feels too warm. Before you know it, trouble is upon you. Intersections are busy places, and it does not take long for anything catastrophic to occur.

Pedestrians are common hazards you do not want to miss because of a distraction. Pedestrians generally have the right of way at intersections, although they do have a duty of care to avoid risk when crossing. Drivers must stay alert to anyone attempting to cross at an intersection and yield for their safety.

The best way to protect yourself while driving through intersections is to keep your eyes on the road at all times. Even though it may be tempting to glance over at your phone to see what that text message says or quickly change the temperature on your AC, it is not worth the risk. Pull over to the side of the road if you must do anything at all.

The Surprises That Are Hiding Behind Blind Spots

Blind spots at intersections are sneaky because they may not appear as blind spots at all. A large truck can block your view of a car that’s coming faster than you expect, or a row of bushes can hide a cyclist who thinks they have plenty of time to cross.

When you are contending with blind spots at an intersection, there are some measures that you can take to remain safe. Give yourself some time to really take in your surroundings. Even if you believe the coast is clear, danger may be tucked away. Some drivers ease forward inch by inch so that they can peek around a truck or hedge. Listening also helps tremendously. Sometimes, you can hear the sound of an engine or tires squealing before your eyes spot anything.

Speed Can Make Everything Worse

What many drivers do not know is that even the tiniest increase in speed can change the outcome of an intersection accident. A car that is going a bit faster needs more distance to stop. You will not realize how much difference a few extra miles per hour can make until you see the damage up close.

Easing off the gas gives you more time to react. That extra second can protect you from a situation that changes before your brain has a chance to catch up.

Many drivers never understood how quickly danger could find them until they faced some close calls themselves. Make sure you always approach intersections with care by slowing down when it counts, avoiding distractions, and being extra vigilant. Never underestimate the dangers that may be lurking.
