The 2026 Chevy Trax continues to prove that an affordable compact SUV does not have to feel cheap.

With a starting price around $23,000 and a well-equipped RS trim pushing close to $28,000, the Trax targets buyers who want modern styling, good technology, and strong fuel economy without stretching their budget. After spending real time behind the wheel, here is how the latest Trax stacks up.

Exterior Design: Sharp Looks for a Budget SUV

From the outside, the 2026 Chevy Trax looks far more upscale than its price suggests. The RS trim brings blacked-out details, including the black bowtie badges, RS badging, piano-black accents, and a subtle chrome strip across the grille. LED light bars front and rear give it a modern look, while 19-inch machined wheels on Continental tires help it stand out in a crowded compact SUV segment. Black mirror caps, black roof rails, and a small sunroof round out a design that feels intentional and cohesive, not entry-level.

Interior & Technology: More Premium Than Expected

Inside, the Trax RS delivers a pleasant surprise. The cabin features RS-specific stitching on the seats, doors, and steering wheel, along with a heated steering wheel and heated front seats on higher trims. The fully digital driver display and central infotainment screen support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which work seamlessly. Physical controls for volume and steering-wheel buttons are still present, making the system easy to use while driving. Storage space is well thought out, with usable bins, cupholders, and a wireless charging pad.

Space & Practicality: Compact but Functional

As a true compact SUV, the Trax prioritizes efficiency over maximum cargo space. The rear cargo area easily handles groceries, backpacks, or weekend bags, though it cannot match larger SUVs for hauling bulky items. The second row technically seats five, though the middle seat is best reserved for short trips. Rear-seat passengers get USB ports, window controls, and acceptable legroom for the segment. The manual tailgate reinforces the Trax’s value-focused positioning.

Powertrain & Fuel Economy: Efficient, Not Exciting

Under the hood is a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Output is modest at 137 horsepower, and acceleration is adequate rather than thrilling. That said, the powertrain feels well matched to the Trax’s size and mission. Fuel economy is a strong point, with EPA ratings around 28 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. Real-world driving confirms those numbers, making it an excellent commuter vehicle.

Driving Impressions & Verdict: A Smart Buy for the Price

In a world where everything seems to be really expensive, it was refreshing to see an SUV that wasn’t that expensive. (Photo by Tim Esterdahl)

On the road, the 2026 Trax is easy to drive and the simplistic layout of the dash makes it a great everyday driver. Seat comfort is noticeably improved over previous generations, and long highway drives are surprisingly fatigue-free. Visibility is excellent, technology works reliably, and ride quality is well suited for daily use. While it will not impress performance enthusiasts, the Trax delivers exactly what most buyers in this price range want: efficiency, comfort and modern features.

For under $30,000, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax is a well-rounded, value-focused compact SUV that excels as a daily driver and commuter. Chevy has clearly refined the formula, and it shows.
