Toyota is pushing the limits of clean off-road capability with the debut of the Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept, a hydrogen fuel cell-powered overlanding truck unveiled at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Built by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) teams in California and North Carolina, the concept combines hydrogen fuel cell and battery-electric technologies to deliver zero-emission adventure with the muscle of a traditional truck.

Based on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, the Tacoma H2-Overlander produces 547 horsepower from dual electric motors—one at each axle—fed by a second-generation Mirai fuel cell stack, three hydrogen tanks (6 kg capacity), and a 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The setup delivers instant torque, quick refueling, and genuine four-wheel-drive capability through front and rear locking differentials.

Engineered for self-sufficiency, the concept includes a 15-kW power takeoff that can run an off-grid home or charge two EVs simultaneously. A patent-pending water recovery system captures and filters water vapor—the only byproduct of the fuel cell—for use in camping and cleaning.

To handle rough terrain, the truck features a TRD long-travel suspension with Fox 2.5 Performance Elite shocks, 35-inch off-road tires, and upgraded Tundra brakes. A custom cooling system and recycled carbon-fiber camper body add to its durability and sustainability.

TRD engineers built the prototype in just a few months, using 3D modeling, in-house fabrication, and a cross-country collaboration between Toyota’s hydrogen and chassis development teams.

“The Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept embodies Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality—showing that clean energy and real-world capability can go hand in hand,” said Mike Tripp, Toyota’s group vice president of marketing.

The concept will be on display November 4–7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center as part of Toyota’s “Powered by Possibility” SEMA showcase, which highlights innovations across every powertrain—from internal combustion to full electric and hydrogen fuel cell.
