2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Spied Testing: New Large Screen, Design, V8 Engines Expected

A 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 prototype has been spied showing off a new larger screen, new design elements and probably powered by a new V8 engine.

We just got our first look at a prototype for the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500, coming about 6 months after our first glimpse of the updated 2027 Silverado 1500.  This new GMC Sierra prototype is identified by the unique makeup of its camouflage—adapted to accommodate the styling differences between Chevy’s and GMC’s full-size trucks.  A close look throughout our photos has us thinking that GMC might be going for more design confluence between the Sierra 1500 and the Sierra EV—both inside and out.

New Front-Fascia

A new grille design shows through the front camouflage mesh on the front-fasica, with a portion blocked out to accommodate the GMC logo at the top of the grille.

Placeholder headlight clusters, but position of the primary headlight suggests lower placement on the front-fascia. The placement looks more consistent with the Sierra EV’s front lights, than with the current Sierra 1500.

The new Sierra 1500 also shows signs of a fresh design on front-bumper, with revised air-intakes that—once again—take some cues from the Sierra EV’s front-fascia. It appears that there’s an additional air-intake where the grille section meets the front bumper.  

Despite the heavy vinyl camouflage, the way the light hits the contours, it appears that there might be more expressive surface development applied to the sheetmetal, possibly bringing some of the beefy stance of the midsize GMC Canyon to the full-size truck.

Taillights Differ From Silverado

The Sierra 1500 prototype shows a different placement of its LED signature, when compared to earlier prototypes of the 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500.  This further proves that this isn’t the Silverado, representing a new development in the testing of GM’s updated full-size trucks.

Huge Display Suggested on Center Stack

We managed to catch a glimpse of the new Sierra’s interior—through an open window, with its dash camo flipped back.  Exposed is a what looks to be a huge center infotainment display on its center stack.  Another large digital screen can be seen in front of the driver.  The screens look significantly larger than what’s on today’s, and once again look closer to the large screen format found in the Sierra EV.

The larger screen would also be vertical to mirror the direction GMC has been heading with to further create separation between it and Chevrolet.

You can find this screen layout on the Sierra EV and many new GM SUVs like the Yukon and Acadia.

New V8 engines?

It isn’t a secret GM is working on the next-generation of V8 engines after making a $888 million investment in an upstate New York engine plant.

This engine design will feature the latest in powertrain development and is expected to include the ability for electrification through either a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid setup.

For those who don’t love cylinder deactivation, lighter-weight oil recommendations and more advanced engine technologies, sorry, these engines are expected to keep all of those items in place.

When will it come out?

We expect to see the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 making its debut next year and it may even be as early as the 2026 North American Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Thew auto show has announced GM will be a key exhibitor. It has been years since automakers made major debuts at auto shows and it is a long shot. Maybe things have finally changed post-COVID and it is time to get back to splashy announcements.
