10-Speed Transmission Wheel Lock-Up Fix

Hooray there is a 10-speed transmission wheel lock-up fix in the form of a new Gen 3 valve body and it is shipping to dealers now.

10-Speed Transmission Wheel Lock-Up Recall Nightmare

If you missed the news, GM announced a massive recall on October 24, 2024 and then a stop/sale on 463,295 trucks and SUVs due to the rear wheels locking up. This was due to the transmission valve body failing on trucks and SUVs with diesel engines only.

The valve body is a complex hydraulic control unit that directs the flow of transmission fluid, enabling the transmission to select the correct gear ratios for smooth and efficient gear changes. It is the brains behind the operation.

Initially, GM created a bandaid fix with software limiting the transmission.

The fix was, “dealers will install new transmission control module software that will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock up condition could occur. Once detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear, preventing the possibility of a wheel lock up condition, which occurs in a downshift from eighth gear. A service engine light and re monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock up condition could occur. Once detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear, preventing the possibility of a wheel lock up condition, which occurs in a downshift from eighth gear. A service engine light and reduced propulsion message will also display in the instrument panel.”

Vehicles affected in the recall include:

The software fix was all fine and dandy for owners who hadn’t had a wheel lock-up occur, but if you had, getting a replacement valve body was a nightmare taking months to come in.

There have been reports of frustrated dealership service managers taking valve bodies from other vehicles or going to an aftermarket company to get customers back on the road.

However, this looks to be all over with GM confirming to us they are now shipping a new and improved Gen 3 valve body.

The new part number is 24071206 and it replaces part number 24065353 according to Max Muncey, Corporate Communications, LaFontaine Automotive Group, a large dealership group based in Michigan.

He further stated they have this part in stock.

The part is newly designed and this is why it has a new part number.

A Facebook post from person who had this part replaced on their truck said the technician noted the new part was completely redesigned with new solenoids, new wiring and a new body design.

There are no photos of this part online at the time of this article.
