The 2026 Jeep Cherokee details are out and it will have hybrid power, an iconic design and it will be built in … Mexico? Huh?
While Jeep is skipping building it at its old plant in Illinois, it still needs this compact SUV to be really successful. The past history hasn’t been kind to Jeep.
The 2024 Jeep Cherokee was the last model year for the compact SUV when the Belvidere Assembly plant in Illinois was closed. Jeep sold just 1,689 Cherokee in 2024. In 2023, Jeep sold 19,219 Cherokee according to CarFigures.com. The Toyota RAV4, the best-selling SUV in the country, sold 475,193 SUVs in the U.S. in 2024 for comparison.
New Hybrid Powertrain, Nope No Plug-In Hybrid

The all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee debuts Stellantis’ first 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder hybrid engine in North America, delivering 210 horsepower and 230 lb.-ft. of torque.
Jeep estimates it will achieve 37 mpg combined and over 500 miles of range per tank which is a damn good number for the compact SUV.
Production of the hybrid system will be based at Stellantis’ Dundee, Michigan, propulsion plant.
It is very interesting Jeep is leading off with this hybrid engine after spending a considerable amount of time and effort pushing its 4XE plug-in hybrid powertrain strategy.
Jeep Capability and Iconic Design

Built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, the 2026 Cherokee is longer, taller, and wider, wearing a boxy, upright exterior inspired by five decades of Jeep heritage. Highlights include squared-off LED headlights, Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille, and distinctive “Jerry Can”-inspired taillights. Off-road performance remains class-leading, with:
- Jeep Active Drive I 4×4 system with rear-axle disconnect
- Selec-Terrain traction management with four drive modes
- Best-in-class approach (19.6°) and departure (29.4°) angles
- 8 inches of ground clearance
Technology, Safety and Connectivity

Packed with 140 standard and available safety features, the 2026 Cherokee comes standard with Active Driving Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path detection, Intersection Collision Assist and Drowsy Driver Detection. Inside, every Cherokee features:
- A 10.25-inch full-color digital instrument cluster
- A 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Uconnect 5 infotainment with OTA update capability
- Stellantis’ new Connect One package with 10 years of connected services included
Available upgrades include a 360-degree camera, Alexa in-vehicle assistant, premium audio, and Jeep’s Off-Road Pages Plus.
More Space, Comfort and Versatility

The redesigned cabin offers 30% more cargo space than the outgoing Cherokee—enough to fit an extra large dog crate with seats folded.
The new rotary gear selector creates additional storage, while available luxury features include a dual-pane sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a foot-activated power liftgate.
Interior design emphasizes playfulness, practicality, and sustainability, with premium materials and recycled content used throughout.
