The completely redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4 will now be fully hybrid or plug-in hybrid, has new sporty on- and off-road models, new technology and next-generation safety features. Here are the five big things you need to know about the all-new RAV4.

2026 Toyota RAV4 gets only electric powertrains

Under the hood, the first big change is the 2026 Toyota RAV4 loses the 2.4-liter engine. Instead, it will only come with hybrid or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options.

The hybrid engine is the same displacement at 2.4-liter and hybrid models will come in front-wheel drive for the first time. It will also be offered in all-wheel drive. For the FWD models, it will produce 226 horsepower, while AWD models will enjoy 10 more horsepower topping out at 236.

For the PHEV, Toyota is increasing the electric-only range to 50 miles, up from 42 miles, through using “silicon carbide semiconductors in the front axle to achieve miniaturization and high efficiency” as well as using a larger battery.

The RAV4 PHEV will also be equipped with a J1772 charging port. This will allow for faster charging at home or at public, non-Tesla public charging stations with up to an 11-kW AC onboard charger.

The PHEV is no slouch with a net 320 horsepower produced with the 2.4-liter engine mated to the battery.

New trim levels, three style groups separate seven grades

The new look RAV4 will feature a new “hammerhead” front end design as Toyota describes it with an exterior styling highlighting its SUV nature. It has the same exterior dimensions as the outgoing model.

For wheels, the combinations will vary with 17-, 18-, or 20-inch wheels available depending on the grade.

Inside, the cabin has been reworked to be more user friendly with larger screens and grouping user functions together.

For trim levels, Toyota is also trying to group things together so it makes it easier for customers and dealers to order.

Toyota is breaking down the seven grades into styles called Core, Rugged and Sport.

For example, LE, XLE and Limited are now under the Core group umbrella. Rugged has one new trim level called Woodland and Sport has XE, XSE and GR-Sport. Both the Woodland and GR-Sport are completely new for the 2026 model year.

Engine choices will vary by trim with PHEV expanding to four trims: SE, XSE, Woodland and GR-Sport. The hybrid engine is now offered in six grades: LE, XLE, Limited, SE, XSE and Woodland. FWD hybrid models will include: LE, XLE and SE.

For exterior colors, Meteor Shower, Everest and Storm Cloud join the standard color lineup. Standard favorites like Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Midnight Black Metallic, Ruby Flare Pearl, and Blueprint will continue for the new generation. The Woodland grade has an exclusive Urban Rock exterior color. There are available two-tone paint options carried forward with a new combination of Meteor Shower with Black roof for XSE or GR-Sport’s exclusive Supersonic Red with a Black roof.

Inside, it will be a mix of Softex or Ultrasuede leather choices for higher trims. The Woodland adds interior accents to make it feel like an outdoor cabin and standard all weather floor mats. For the GR Sport, it receives GR logos on the front headrest and steering wheel as well as paddle shifters and aluminum sport pedals.

GR Sport adds GAZOO racing expertise

A new 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport makes its debut in partnership with Toyota GAZOO Racing.

This more aggressive looking RAV4 with a GR-matrix grille, front and rear spoilers and wide-tread summer tires riding on unique 20-inch wheels.

It comes with the PHEV powertrain with AWD, a GR-tuned suspension and power steering and enhanced body rigidity.

Woodland is designed to hit the trails

For the outdoors fan, the RAV4 Woodland is sure to be a hit. It features a slightly higher ride height, black split upper and lower grille with integrated Ridgid Industries LED lighting.

This RAV4 stands about a half inch higher thanks to the standard all-terrain tries, has standard raised roof rails with crossbars and a 1 1/4 -inch rear activity mount for hauling items like mountain bikes.

It will be available in AWD and in either a hybrid or a PHEV powertrain.

New technology abounds

The other big change customers will notice is the larger screens inside the cabin and new technology including a new generation of Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 as well as Toyota Audio Multimedia System.

First, a new, slim 10.5-inch or available 12.9-inch touchscreen will now include digital HVAC controls integrated along the bottom of the touchscreen display. The 10.5-inch is larger than the outgoing 8-inch touchscreen on the lower grades and standard on LE, XLE, SE and Woodland. For the Limited, XSE and GR-Sport, the 12.9-inch screen is standard.

The driver gets a new, standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with customizable options and integrated multimedia information. There is also a head-up display available on Limited and XSE grades.

For the touchscreen display, the new Toyota software will have standard wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility and simultaneous dual Bluetooth phone connectivity. There is also a new home button displayed whether you are on the native system or on Apple Carplay or Android Auto. The native Voice Assistant has been improved as well as native map and navigation.

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is being released as well. The new version will have updates to the hardware and detection capabilities that Toyota has yet to release details on yet.

A nine-speaker JBL premium audio system will be available while a six-speaker audio system is standard.

Pricing, fuel economy estimates and on-sale date will be announced later this year.

Our take on the 2026 Toyota RAV4

The powertrains are a win with the more power output and hopefully better MPG. Hybrid has been around for a while now and nothing to fear for reliability. The Woodland and GR Sport are going to be the lead models for Toyota to promote, yet I see them as slow sellers. People buy this for an economical SUV for a small family or daily driver. I think the core models will still be the big seller.

Having Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard are a big win and FINALLY a home button is a big deal. The digital HVAC controls? Hard pass. Too distraction and they don’t work nearly as well as physical buttons in every single vehicle I’ve driven.

The styling is in the eye of the beholder. I see this as a mixed bag of improvements and I’m holding back on final judgement until I can see it in person and get behind the wheel.
