Jeep discontinued the petite Cherokee after the 2023 model year due to declining sales and a focus on higher-priced models like the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. However, after a regime change and the threat of Trump tariffs, more affordable cars are gearing up to make a comeback. While it’s unlikely that the decision to bring back the 2026 Jeep Cherokee was a snap decision, it fits in well with the changing ethos of the company and the country.

While few details have been released thus far about the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, there are a few things we know for sure, and there are a few things we think we know.

What we know about the 2026 Jeep Cherokee

First and foremost, we know the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will have a hybrid powertrain available. We’re guessing this will be a plug-in hybrid like the other 4xe vehicles in the Jeep lineup. Previously the Cherokee had two gas powertrain options: a 2.0-liter, I-4 turbo and a 2.4-liter, I-4 non-turbo. Both engines were built in the U.S., so we could see either of those engines making a return as the base powertrain – but since we see the 2.0-liter turbo in other Jeep hybrids, that’s the likeliest bet.

Outside of the fact that the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will have a hybrid option, we have zero other concrete details.

From the two released exterior photos, we see a two-tone paint option with a black roof, more rugged front styling, LED daytime running lights, fog lights and a nice set of wheels.

While we don’t have any interior shots, we’ll assume it will get the latest and greatest tech, which will include Uconnect 5 and at least a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment. This would include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Where will it be built?

The “where” is TBD, but since the last-gen Jeep Cherokee was built at the now-idled Belvidere, Ill., plant, we have high hopes that it will be built in the U.S. – maybe even at that same plant. Stellantis has previously announced that the plant will re-open to build a midsize Ram truck. Whether it could also sustain a small SUV as well is the big question mark.

What will the new Cherokee cost?

We do have some guidance on this, though no direct price point. In the press release announcing the return of the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said: “Jeep Cherokee will boast competitive pricing that strikes at the core of the largest vehicle segment and sits perfectly between Jeep Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee to bolster our winning mainstream lineup.”

If we take this literally, that would put the price at about $31,700 since the Jeep Compass starts at $26,900, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee starts at $36,495. Essentially, it will start in the low $30k range. If this hybrid is a plug-in, we would expect about a $10k bump for that model.

Our take on the new Jeep Cherokee

With the average price of a new car costing just less than $50k in 2025, we are due for something more affordable. A small SUV with good tech, fuel efficient power train and handsome design is just what we need. So, I can’t wait to see this re-imagined Jeep Cherokee in IRL.

With the new energy being pumped into Stellantis of late, we have high hopes.

My 2019 Cherokee has been rock solid (now 7 years old) and continues to do everything I need it to. With the 3.2-liter engine, it offers solid towing capability (4,500 lbs) and surprisingly good fuel economy for daily use.

I've towed a pop-up camper many times and upgraded from a single snowmobile trailer to the one picture last year (7x12 with electric breaks), now pulling two sleds with ease.

In my opinion, Stellantis made a big mistake by discontinuing the Cherokee in 2023. While the Compass offers roughly the same interior space, it can't match the Cherokee’s towing capacity. And although the Grand Cherokee can handle towing, it's out of budget for many of us.

For me, the Cherokee is like a Swiss Army knife. I had a 2014 model before upgrading to the 2019, and I’ve never regretted either. Hopefully, the new one will retain the same level of capability, otherwise, it’ll just be another SUV with little utility beyond hauling groceries.

Really looking forward to knowing all the specs of the coming one.
