Toyota is one of the most well-known brands in the world, seemingly dominating the car industry. It’s not for nothing that the brand is so well regarded either, with their sturdy and reliable vehicles suitable for every driver, from day-to-day commuting to long-haul drivers and truckers.

In this article, we delve into why the famous brand still endures to this day.

A little history

For a brand so synonymous with vehicle manufacturing, it’s surprising to learn that Toyota didn’t actually start with cars.

In 1918, a guy named Sakichi Toyoda invented the first automatic loom. Meaning that the ‘first toyota’ was actually a textile weaving machine. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the company started making cars. Now, they sell millions of vehicles every year and dominate markets all over the globe.

So, what makes Toyota such a beast in the auto world?

Everybody Googles Toyota

Toyota isn’t just a car brand—it’s a phenomenon. According to Compare the Market, it’s the most searched-for car brand in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, and plenty of other places. People all over the world seem to trust Toyota, and that kind of brand loyalty doesn’t happen by accident.

Built to last

Ask anyone who’s ever owned a Toyota what they love about it, and they’ll probably say something like, “It just runs.” Toyota has built its reputation on reliability. Their Toyota Hilux engine, more specifically, is known as the engine that never dies.

Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability survey ranked Toyota as the third most reliable car brand, with four models scoring well above average, and seven models scoring above average. That’s why so many people buy Toyota, they see it as a bit of a long-term investment, rather than just a car.

Sales that speak for themselves

Toyota dominates the market. In 2024 alone, they moved a jaw-dropping 10.8 million vehicles. Now, they’ve held the world’s best-selling automaker for 5 years running. They’ve got a car for just about everyone – fuel-efficient sedans, rugged trucks, family-friendly SUVs, and luxury models for those who want the finer things in life. Whatever you need, Toyota probably makes it.

The hybrid OGs

Toyota did hybrids before hybrids were cool. The Prius, launched in 1997, was the first mass-produced hybrid car in the world. Today, they’re still leading the charge (pun intended) with models like the RAV4 Hybrid, proving that you don’t have to choose between power and fuel efficiency.

Always pushing forward

Along with making cars, Toyota is shaping the future of transportation. They’ve been investing in hydrogen fuel cell technology for decades, and now they’re diving deep into electric vehicles. Their Toyota bZ4X is a recent step toward a greener future, and it’s all part of their Beyond Zero initiative. This initiative is focused on creating sustainable mobility solutions. They’re setting trends, that’s for sure!

More than just cars

Toyota aren’t just car manufacturers, they also make forklifts, robots, and houses. Plus, Toyota is one of the largest producers of industrial equipment in the world.

Toyota’s has built its empire around reliability, innovation, and understanding what drivers actually want. As the auto industry keeps evolving, one thing’s for sure – Toyota isn’t going anywhere.
