Looking at the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500, which is already 6 years into its lifecycle, you might be wondering if there are any big changes afoot. The answer in a word: Nope. Similar to the 2025 Chevy Silverado 1500, the changes are minimal.

Here’s a quick look at what is new on the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 and its on sale now at dealerships like GMC dealer in Calgary.

What’s new on the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500

Let’s start with what’s not new: the powertrains carry over, and you still have the option of a 2.7-liter, 4-cylinder turbo; a 3.0-liter, inline-6 turbo diesel; a 5.3-liter V-8; and a 6.2-liter V-8. As automakers begin ditching the V-8 engines, even in their full-size trucks, the fact that General Motors still offers two V-8 options in its trucks feels a bit bougie.

Yes, Ford Motor Co. still offers a pair of V-8 engines, but the 5.0-liter V-8 is the only one available in the base F-150s. The supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 is only offered on the Raptor R. The Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra have both dropped the V-8 engine from their truck lineups.

So, what is new? In short: new wheels and more standard features. More specifically, you now have available 22-inch bright split-spoke wheels, cruise control becomes standard on the Pro trim, and a trailer brake controller is now standard on the SLE trim and above. Oh, and Super Cruise is now standard on the Denali Ultimate.

There is also about a $2k price increase. But that’s it.

When can we expect the next-gen Sierra?

Part of the reason the changes for the 2025 model are so small is because we expect GMC to reveal the next-gen truck in 2026 as a 2027 model. Traditionally, as a vehicle slides into the final years of its lifecycle, we typically only see modest changes like new paint colors, special editions or, well, new wheels. So, don’t expect big changes for 2026 either.

So, what do we expect for the next generation of the GMC Sierra 1500? More tech, more power and more refinement. A lot of this could be in flux because of the current administration, but given that product planning in the auto industry typically goes back 5 years, we’re reasonably sure that wheels set in motion aren’t going to be come to a halt.

We’ve heard that GM will be adding plug-in hybrids to its lineup in 2027, and it makes sense to start with the biggest vehicles in its lineup. However, we don’t expect the V-8 to go away either as the company has recently made big investments at the factories that build these engines.

The refinement part is a given because GMC, but the upset, here, could be in the tech department. GM has committed to removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all of its vehicles – not just its EVs. So, the next-gen Sierra 1500 would be a great place to start that transition — especially since truck guys usually care less about the tech and more about the capability of the truck.

Other than that, we’ll surely see some design changes, and trim changes. But this far out, our crystal ball is still fuzzy. So, stay tuned for more details as we have them.

Our take on the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500

Since the mid-cycle refresh occurred in 2022, we don’t see any more big changes for this generation. Expect more of the same for 2026.
