most 2024 automaker recalls by brand

This year, the most 2024 automaker recalls goes to Chrysler/Stellantis, replacing Ford as the leader for the last few years.

Most 2024 automaker recalls by brand

Each week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes a list of recalls and we cover many of the top recalls. They then publish the brands with the most recalls by year.

Here is the latest information from NTHSA.gov:

As of December 31, 2024, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported the following car brands with the most recalls in 2024:

  • Chrysler/Stellantis: 72 recalls
  • Ford: 64 recalls
  • BMW: 36 recalls
  • General Motors: 33 recalls
  • Mercedes-Benz USA: 27 recalls
  • Hyundai: 25 recalls
  • Jaguar Land Rover: 20 recalls
  • Kia: 19 recalls
  • Volkswagen: 18 recalls
  • Honda: 18 recalls
  • Toyota: 16 recalls
  • Tesla: 15 recalls

Notable 2024 recalls

Ford

In June 2024, Ford recalled 555,000 F-150 trucks for harsh downshifts.

In September 2024, Ford recalled 90,736 trucks and SUVs due to a potential issue with engine intake valves that may crack and lead to “catastrophic engine failure.”

In November 2024, NHTSA fined Ford a record $165 million for failure to meet Federal recall requirements.

In December 2024, Ford recalled nearly 300,000 Super Duty and Medium Duty trucks due to complications stemming from, well COVID-19 pandemic. These trucks shipped with a high-pressure fuel pump that is sensitive to the buildup of deposits from biodiesel sitting too long which happened during COVID when people weren’t driving as much.

General Motors

In August 2024, GM recalled 461,000 diesel engine equipped trucks and SUVs over the rear wheels locking up.

In September 2024, GM recalled 450,000 trucks and SUVs for the electronic brake control module software failing to displace a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs.

In December 2024, GM expanded an existing recall on a powered tailgate latch to include another 132,000 trucks. This brought the total recalled to 464,000.

Ram

In September 2024, Stellantis recalled 1.2 million 2019, 2021-2024 Ram 1500 trucks due to a software malfunction, the anti-lock brake system (ABS) control module may disable the electronic stability control system.

In December 2024, Stellantis said it was recalling 318,000 Ram HD trucks due to a hydraulic control unit failure which can cause the anti-lock brake (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control systems to fail.

Tesla

Recalled over 2 million vehicles due to a warning lights issue. The recall included the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, and 2019-2024 Model Y. Cybertruck has had 6 recalls in the first year.

Toyota

In June 2024, Toyota said it found debris in 100,000 engines in Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX vehicles. Toyota is replacing all these engines.

The bottom line

Recalls are a tricky thing with some of them related to quality like the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia recall while others are for simply having the wrong tire loading sticker on the door jamb.

They are, though, a cumbersome issue for many owners who simply get tired of taking their vehicles in for warranty work.

So by my calculations; FORD recalled 945,000 vehicles, GM 593,000, TESLA - 1,000,000 and Stellantis 12,000,000. Yikes.

Those are just the major recalls. There's lots of small ones with a few thousands or a few dozen.

I still say vehicle qty and recall qty only matters in context with what the recall is for. If every truck shipped with the wrong tire label means much less to me than the fact that only a small qty shipped missing a bolt that keeps the transmission from locking up while doing 60mph down the hwy.

I had the software recall for my 2023 Ram for the stability control issue. I never noticed anything. The update took little time. I guess I agree with Dusdaddy it depends what the recall is for… if it’s to replace my engine I may be more concerned lol. I have heard of people having to bring their cars back for multiple recalls and leaving the vehicle for days at a time… I’m sure that would get old very quickly.
