Remember that recall we reported on last month? The one that involved debris in the 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra engines? Yeah, the one that had Tundra owners in a pickle because dealers didn’t want their trade-ins. Well, Toyota now has a fix, and it involves replacing the engine in all vehicles involved, which covers about 100k Toyota Tundras and Lexus LXs.
Recall recap
In essence, the 2022-2023 Lexus LX and Toyota Tundra engines could run rough and eventually fail because machining debris was not cleared when they were produced. Affected engines were built both in Japan and Huntsville, Alabama.
The engine in question: The turbocharged V-6.
The investigation into the problem began in March of 2022, and a voluntary recall was issued in May of 2024. We have a detailed timeline of the investigation, but the end result is engine replacement.
Lexus LX, Toyota Tundra engines replaced
When the recall notice was issued, there was no known fix, which is what caused the problem with dealer trade-ins. Now, according to an Automotive News article, owners will be notified of the engine replacement later this month, and it will be done at no cost to the owners.
Toyota told Automotive News that owners would receive a loaner or rental vehicle while the repairs were being made, which is expected to take between 13 to 21 hours. In dealer speak, that could be anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks.
Also, Toyota posted a press release confirming it will be a full engine replacement.
The bottom line
At least there’s a fix? Obviously, this is not what new owners want to hear. But on the upside, Toyota finally has a plan in place to fix its vehicles – and keep owners happy by providing a loaner.

Jil/Tim,
watch the details of your article, you have all “affected”, its not, its all “vehicles involved”. The difference is you don’t have to have a failure to be involved, but you do to be affected, so this is much larger than just the vehicles that are affected by the saftey recall with an actual failure.
also, maybe you guys can clarify with toyota, the letter with the fix that just came out today (copy on the forums) has owners will get a new “engine assembly”. in toyota parts speak, that was only a portion of the engine in the past, maybe you can confirm as the letter does not simply state “new engine”.

Toyota stated in its press release it will replace engines. “For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers.”

yup all involved, not just the “affected ones”. Also, have you seen the actual letter, the wording is different, it says “engine assembly”, not new engine that the press room letter says

I updated the text. I saw the notice. Wording is different, but I think that’s more about how it is reported by the app vs PR. I’d imagine the app has to state the part’s official name whereas PR can just call it for what it is.

ya 100% . just in the past in Toyota parts speak “engine assembly” was the not the entire motor but only a group of parts that was not the entire thing. Thats why I was wondering on the clarification between press room and letter. lets hope its full motor and not a portion labeled as “engine assembly”. Thats why I wondering if you had or could get clarification from toyota on this.
thanks Tim
