Mazda used to have a midsize CX-7 in its lineup, but that was discontinued in 2012. The CX-5 and CX-50 are classified as compact and the all-new CX-90 is considered midsize, even though it has three rows. Now, we have the 2025 Mazda CX-70 that sits somewhere between the CX-50 and CX-90. Though this is just an initial launch for the SUV and we don’t have a lot of the gritty details, here’s what we do know.
Electrified but not electric
After Mazda’s failed attempt at an EV, we don’t see this automaker dipping its toe in that water again any time soon, but it is starting to look more at fuel efficiencies combined with fun-to-drive dynamics. So, like the CX-90, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 will have two powertrains the SkyActiv G 3.3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo with M-Hybrid Boost (aka auto stop/start) or the e-SkyActiv G PHEV. Though the press release doesn’t give any details, if it matches the CX-90, the inline 6 will have Turbo and Turbo S versions. The CX-90 base power delivery is 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo S delivers 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Again, if it follows the CX-90, the CX-70’s plug-in hybrid will include a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 engine that delivers 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with 26 miles of all electric range.
2025 Mazda CX-70 is a midsize two-row
The CX-70 will be built on Mazda’s large platform – the same as the CX-90. So, where big brother gives that room over to a third row, the CX-70 dedicates that space to the cargo area for people with active lifestyles. In addition to a remote-folding rear seat, the cargo area has been optimized for storage with additional compartments and hooks. Plus, there’s a “sub” trunk underneath the load floor that will allow owners to stow small items out of sight.

New tech features
In addition the hands-on Cruising and Traffic Support system we’ve seen in the CX-90, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 adds Unresponsive Driver Support, which will automatically decelerate and stop the vehicle if the driver is unresponsive to escalating alerts. It will also get Amazon Alexa integration, which will allow for voice prompting to do things like changing the temperature or radio station within the car as well as controlling smart home devices.
Infotainment unchanged
For those who dislike the Mazda infotainment, you don’t get any good news here. Though it wasn’t mentioned in the press release, the photos clearly show the rotary control dial and the same menu screens we see on the Mazda CX-90. But what this also means is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be touch screen while in use. It’s just the native Mazda system that will need to be controlled by the dial.
Near luxury vibe
Following the recent design trend at Mazda, the new CX-70 goes decidedly upscale with luxurious finishing touches and a high-end design – inside and out. The exterior looks sporty but elegant and the interior follows suit. There will even be an available red Nappa leather interior surfaces with red stich detailing, which was inspired by the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5.
The bottom line
We don’t yet know when the 2025 CX-70 will be available, but we expect we’ll get more details and have the opportunity to test drive it within a couple months. So, we’d say late spring, early summer is a good guess. And as far as pricing is concerned, since it sits between the CX-50 ($30,300) and the CX-90 ($39,595), we expect it to come in around $35k at a base.
