2024 Chevy Traverse: 5 things to know

Let the overlanding theme of 2023 continue. Chevy just introduced the 2024 Traverse, and this next-gen midsize SUV gets an off-road savvy Z71 trim as well as LS, LT and RS trims.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse gets a single powertrain, new tech, more safety features and a rugged design overhaul. Here are the most important things to know about this new SUV.

The V-6 is gone

The previous-gen Traverse was equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivered 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. New for the 2024 Chevy Traverse, you’ll see 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a similar power curve. Though the official numbers aren’t in yet, General Motors estimates this powertrain will deliver 315 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.

New Z71 trim is adventure-ready

Though the 2024 Chevy Traverse gets a general rugged redesign, the Z71 trim is extra. Standard features include an extra inch of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, an aluminum front skid plate, red tow hooks and a trailering package. In terms of off-road capability, the Z71 also adds a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system, unique dampers with hydraulic rebound control, specific terrain modes and hill-descent control.

Safety is standard, kind of

One of the biggest beefs we have with GM vehicles is the lack of standard safety features. Chevy seems to address that with the 2024 Traverse adding standard safety tech such as automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, automatic high beams and pedestrian braking systems.

However, they keep a lot of the good stuff (stuff that’s standard on a $22k Toyota Corolla) as “available” features. You’ll have to pay more for features such as rear park assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, around-view cameras, traffic sign recognition, intersection automatic emergency braking and rear automatic braking.

Screens get bigger

The 2024 Chevy Traverse gets a huge tech upgrade beginning with the screens. The gauge cluster is an 11-inch digital display, and the infotainment screen is available at 17.7 inches – that’s two times larger than the previously largest screen available.

Other tech we’ll see on the new Traverse includes wireless phone charging, six standard USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, OnStar, HD stream and in-vehicle apps.

What’s really interesting: There’s ZERO mention of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. However, a GM spokesperson did confirm the 2024 model (at least) will get CarPlay and Auto.

Available in 2024

Though we don’t have any specific details about when the vehicle will be available, the press release does state that we’ll see it in “early” 2024. To us, that means Q1. Since we’re still about 6 months away from production, we also don’t have any pricing information. But for reference, the current base price is $34,915.

The bottom line

At launch, we won’t see a Premiere or High Country version of the 2024 Chevy Traverse. That’s not to say they aren’t coming, but it does appear that Chevrolet is opting for a more overlanding/off-road focus with this midsize SUV, so perhaps the RS will be as high-end as it gets. Obviously, we’re still really far out from detailed specs and information, so stay tuned. We’ll share more as we get more.
