It’s time for the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas again, and while this isn’t supposed to be a car show, it’s kind of becoming one – especially in the EV space. So, expect a lot of electric car news to come out this week, starting with the 2024 Volvo EX90.
While this new EV made its global debut back in November, this is the first time we’re seeing it Stateside. Spoiler alert: It looks a lot like the current Volvo XC90.
While we still don’t have too many details about this new EV, we do know it’ll get 300 miles of range, deliver 496 horsepower, have seven seats, charge up to 80% in 30 minutes, tow up to 4,850 pounds and start under $80k.
Self-driving tech built in
One of the more interesting things about this new three-row SUV is that it will get built in self-driving hardware and software, including one long-range lidar, five radars, eight cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors. And it appears that it will all be standard.
All of this tech will combine to help the driver – and the vehicle – see further afield. In fact, the lidar can see a small object two football fields away, day and night.
Furthermore, the system is designed to get smarter and safer overtime as well as receive over-the-air updates.
EX90 available in 2024
Though you can pre-order this electric SUV now for a $500 refundable deposit, you can’t actually configure it until late 2023, and deliveries won’t start until 2024. We don’t know when the actual pricing will be announced, but we expect it will be much, much closer to when people can configure the vehicle, so late 2023.
The bottom line
We love the electric SUVs we’ve driving from Volvo so far, including the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, so it’s hard to imagine them getting even better. But this 2024 Volvo EX90 seems like it will raise the bar. A lot. From the minimalist interior design to the re-imagined Thor’s hammer headlights, we are really looking forward to seeing – and driving – this vehicle IRL.
