If you are shopping for a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, you might be curious about any known problems that have already cropped up for this truck. But before we dig into them, we need to point out the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is an odd model year because it got a massive refresh right in the middle.
When you are looking at a 2022 Sierra 1500, an easy way to tell if it is older or newer is the interior. The upper trims of the refreshed models are completely redone with a larger infotainment screen, Google-powered operating system and digital gauges. Also, the early 2022 Sierra trucks are referred to as “Sierra 1500 Limited” trucks.
With that said, we don’t have a lot of information on the reliability of the infotainment system or software yet. However, we do have a bunch of other things to share.
For this list, we used three sources: CarComplaints.com, NHTSA.gov and ConsumerReports.org.
Major 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 known problems
Kicking off the list with the major issues, we see a lot of discussion about the engine.
The complaints center around engine lifter failure for the V-8s and long-crank, no-start issues for the diesel.
Another issue has been the performance of the 6- and 8-speed transmissions, yet the new 10-speed automatic transmission has had fewer complaints.
Finally, there have been quite a few complaints about the power steering going out sporadically.
Minor known problems
Moving past the engine and older transmission problems, other issues include the typical infotainment system complaints every brand is seeing (phone not connecting and other items), some discussion on brake warning lights coming on and a myriad of other small issues.
Most of the smaller complaints seem to be around a few lemon trucks and don’t represent a larger percentage of 2022 GMC Sierra 1500s on the road.
2022 GMC Sierra 1500 recalls
At the time of writing this article, there is one recall for the trucks dealing with an “inoperative high-mounted brake light” not working correctly. And this only affects 242 trucks.
We expect to see more recalls as more trucks hit the market for a longer period of time — and that’s normal.
Looking back to the 2021 model year, there were a total of four recalls with only one major one affecting thousands of trucks with the front center seat belt bracket not being secured for trucks with a front bench seat.
Consumer Reports view of 2022 GMC Sierra 1500
Things get pretty interesting for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 when looking at Consumer Reports. This was the media outlet that said the GM half-ton trucks were the least reliable truck at one time.
Have things improved? Not really.
While you’ll need to subscribe to see the exact findings, we can say the truck is rated as middle of the road when it comes to reliability.
CR basically calls out the same things we mentioned above as possible issues.
The bottom line
Any truck you buy can be a lemon, and while the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 isn’t known as the most-reliable truck in our research, we know many owners who have had good luck with them. For your own peace of mind, we recommend you go with a newer one with the 10-speed transmission and keep an eye on your engine in case it develops lifter issues.

I have a GMC 2022 Sierra Denali ultimate with the 3.0-liter six-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel engine. the truck if self runs great the mileage is great My best so far is 6 liters per 100 Km my average is 8.5 liters per 100 Km. My issue is the info center it controls almost 75% of the truck. from the back plugin the box, to the seats, the Nav, no OnStar, no internet but I still had to pay. and much more I have been dealing with this issue since October 2023. first the radio was on back order over a month, then they got a new one in, and they hooked it up and they went to program it blow up on them and a month and a half wait for another one. Oh yes, I did drive this truck down to Florida. It cost me $325.00 Canadian in fuel round trip.

I purchased my 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 in June 2022. Since I purchased it, it has been in and out of the shop many times. I joked with the service writer to schedule a recurring 2-week appointment for it because that was how often I was bringing it in. So far they had to replace the catalytic converter, service the 4WD system including replacing an actuator, and several other check engine light occurrences. It has now been in the shop for two and a half months due to a bad serial data gateway module (SDGM), followed by a bad engine control module (ECM). I was told these parts are backordered which is the reason for the delay. I have not found any other complaints regarding SDGM or ECM issues that have been a major complaint, yet there are major parts delays and shortages.

I purchased a new 2022 refresh at4 and have had issues with the electronic shift showing unable to shift and check engine light coming on. Once this happens u can let the truck run for a few minutes and it will reset and your able to shift. The lane assist and cruise control does not work as well and have taken to the dealer more than once and they are unable to fix.
