A new teaser video reveals a 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison is coming and it is sure to be a big hit for the off-road enthusiast.
Building on the Silverado ZR2 and working with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), the 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison should have a variety of straight-from-factory mods to increase its capability much like it did for the midsize Colorado ZR2 Bison.
These parts are trail tested from the AEV team and generally designed to take a beating with unique material choices.
What could the Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison be like?
An easy way to figure out what the Silverado ZR2 Bison might get for equipment is either to freeze frame the teaser video or look at the smaller Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison.
On that truck, we see the following upgrades:
- CHEVROLET lettered grille
- AEV front bumper with winch provisions, and rear bumper with recovery points
- AEV Hot-stamped Boron Steel skid plates for front differential, engine oil pan, transfer case, fuel tank and rear differential
- AEV-designed fender flares
- AEV-designed 17″ wheels (also applies to spare)
- Fog lamps
- Contoured front and rear floor liners with AEV logo
This package adds $5,750 on top of the Colorado ZR2 price of $45,290.
If you read the list carefully, you see a variety of things like a new bumper for better approach and departure angle, new wheels, AEV logos and fog lamps. Oh and Boron Steel.
I had never heard of Boron Steel until I was talking with AEV President Dave Harriton on a trail. He admitted it was a strange name, however, it shouldn’t be discounted. It is a thin, light-weight metal able to withstand a beating and makes an excellent material for skid plates.
Digging a bit deeper on Boron Steel, SSAB, a global steel company, says it is a “a carbon-boron steel produced in accordance with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) chemical composition limits. 15B30 is a carbon steel with boron added to enhance the hardenability, strength and wear resistance compared to plain carbon steels of the same carbon content.
Common applications for 15B30 include ground engaging tools and agriculture components such as tiller disks, sweeps and spikes.
If it is strong enough for agricultural equipment, it should be strong enough for the Silverado ZR2.
Finally, don’t expect much in the way of engine or transmission changes for the ZR2 Bison package.
Chevrolet says the truck will debut later this Summer.
The bottom line
Off-road pickups are one of the hottest things on the market these days, and it makes complete sense for a Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison to be part of Chevrolet’s offerings since it can literally take the knowledge and experience gained from the Colorado and apply it to the larger truck.
With all that said, we can’t wait to drive it!
