Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 300k Explorer SUVs and Super Duty trucks for rollaway problems related to the driveshaft and transmission.
The transmission problems were released in two separate recalls relating to a somewhat same issue.
Rollaway problems for SUVs
For the SUVs, Ford is recalling 252,936 vehicles in total and specifically certain 2020-2021 Explorer Police FHEV, Explorer Police 3.3-liter, and 2020-2022 Explorer 2.3-liter rear-wheel drive, 3.0L PHEV, 3.3-liter FHEV, and 3.0-liter ST gas vehicles according to a NHTSA 22V255000 recall campaign document. Ford says the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect. When the driveshaft is disconnected, the SUVs could rollaway on their own without the vehicle holding park.
The fix is for dealers to replace the busing and axle cover or update the electronic parking brake software. Owners will be notified via letter mailed out on June 6, 2022. Ford’s number for this recall is 22S27.
Rollaway problems for Super Duty trucks
For the Super Duty trucks, Ford is recalling 23,165 vehicles and specifically certain 2020 Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles equipped with 6.7-liter diesel engine, according to NHTSA 22V256000 recall campaign document. Ford says a washer within the vehicle’s transmission can disintegrate, causing metallic debris to become lodged in the “Park” mechanism. This would allow the truck to not remain in Park and it could rollaway on its own.
The fix is for dealers to replace a gearset within the transmission. Owners will be notified via letter mailed out on May 30, 2022. Ford’s number for this recall is 22S22.
Ford did not offer any guidance on whether or not your should drive your SUV or truck while waiting for repair. It is strongly recommended you take precautions until the repair is completed in case your vehicle accidently rolls away and causes damage to your vehicle or another vehicle near it.
