Before you pull the trigger on a new truck with a bowtie, you’ll want to know what the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 known problems are and whether you should be looking at a different brand. Here’s what you need to know.
For the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, there are two different versions of the truck with an LTD version and the newly refreshed version. We put them together for this post, however, be advised the refreshed model has a new infotainment screen powered by Android automotive. This infotainment system is the source of many complaints, and that could skew some of the results we found online.
Plus, with so few 2022 Chevy Silverado models on dealer lots, we are going to reference 2021 model year information as well to give a broader picture.
Speaking of online, for the information found below, we use three sources: CarComplaints.com, NHTSA.gov and ConsumerReports.org.
Major 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 known problems
Let’s start with the major problems and work our way down to the minor issues.
The top issue for Chevy Silverado is around the engine. The majority of complaints center around engine lifter failure for V-8 engines and long-crank, no-start issues for the diesel.
Prior years had a lot of complaints about transmissions, but since General Motors went to the 10-speed transmission, we are hearing less of those complaints.
Minor known problems
Besides engine issues, the other main issues include rare engine stalling, infotainment system issues, slight issues with brakes, transmission lurching and quality of paint on the truck.
These minor problems are relatively small compared to the number of Chevy trucks they sell each month. For example, the paint concerns is just 5 complaints.
2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 recalls
Since the trucks are just getting on dealer lots at the time of this post, it is no surprise there are 0 recalls for it.
Looking at the 2021 model, which is basically the same truck, and we find some data that is useful. For example, NHTSA.gov reports 5 recalls, 1 investigation and 72 complaints on the truck.
The recalls are all relatively minor with two addressing issues with tires, two for seat belts not being installed right and one with a front driver’s side air bag missing metal tags it needs so it doesn’t explode accidentally.
Consumer Reports view of Chevy Silverado 1500
Outside of the engine issues, you might think everything else is fine on the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 — until you check out Consumer Reports. It isn’t good.
CR gives the truck a low mark for predicted reliability and puts owner satisfaction at average. This low prediction for reliability is based on findings for the last 5 years where, let’s just say, the Silverado 1500 wasn’t so hot for reliability.
As we reported before, the 2021 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra were ranked as the least reliable full-size truck and without massive changes for the 2022 model year, CR expects this trend to continue.
The bottom line
When looking at all of these issues, it is fairly remarkable there aren’t more problems, since GM sells hundreds of thousands of Chevy Silverado 1500 trucks each year. So, if you truly want this truck, these issues shouldn’t give you too much pause. But if you like another brand’s truck just as well, these issues could be what tips you in that direction. Regardless, knowing the pain points are half the battle.

Bought the 22 Silverado 6.2 and had the tailgate replaced due to warpage, had full engine replacement at 3k miles due to lifter issues. Broke down at 10k miles, found out that my transmission seized and had to replace the valve body on the transmission. Just got it back 3 days ago and now my engine is knocking and have major loss of power. Incredibly frustrated with this truck.

My 2022 high country Silverado paint scratches so easy. When I tried to clean the bugs off I scratch my truck. Around all the door handles are scratch. Does anyone else’s truck scratch that easy.

Excellerated merging onto interstate and engine started running rough. Run real rough at idle. Traction control and escape started flashing on dash. Only 5000 mi on truck. Shut the truck off for a hour and seams to run better. Still have check engine light on. Got dealer appointment 5 days from now.

Having major issues with the new digital dash. Start the truck and the dash is black. Nothing working. Has been going on for several
Months now, but couldn’t get an appointment until Feb 2. Did it again on a road trip and couldn’t move for over 30 minutes. All the dealership said was give it 15 min and restart. I see others with the same issue. Is there a fox or is it a lemon?

JUST got brand new Silverado. Cannot start it with key fob 50% of the time. Cannot open door locks with key fob. Have put in fresh batteries and no difference with both key fobs. Dealer will not help saying they cannot replicate. Bunch of Hooey. GM saying ” we are just a distributor and cannot make dealer fix it. ” Off to the attorney I go. $50,000 waste of money.

has anyone found a fix to relocate driver seat further back for more leg room in a double cab? we got a new 2022 chevy 3500 double cab single rear wheel gas at work and the seats are way to far forward for anyone on the crew to drive remotely comfortably.

After purchasing my 2022 Silverado I noticed that there was no protection between the rear wheels and the frame. I called the dealership and they told me that those are no longer issued on the new trucks.
Is this true or just the dealership I dealt with?

I have a 2022 Silverado 1500 RST and when driving over 50 mph I hear wind rumbling the cab and can feel “buffeting” of the cab. Its to where you have to turn up the radio a bit if you want to hear it . The “buffeting” isnt heavy, but you can feel the cab moving. Has anybody else experienced this and what is the cause/soultion? A lot of money for a truck that feels like an aerodynamic failure.

Bought a 2022 silverado short bed . While driving down the road looking in the driverside rear view mirror I noticed the door lines did not match the bed line. It was offset about 3/4″ The passenger side did not have that defect. Brought the truck back to the dealership to get fixed, I was told it is a nation wide issue. To my surprise every other 2022 Silverado in the parking lot had the same defect. Went back in and asked why would you charge me full price for something that is crooked? I was basically told too bad your problem now. I feel that if the dealership knows its a nationwide issue, then there needs to be a nationwide discount.
