We’ve been hearing rumors for a while now about the potential return of the Dodge Dakota under the Ram brand. And, now that Fiat Chrysler has officially merged with PSA Group, we’ve even postulated the Peugeot Landrek could be the basis for a new 2022 Dakota.
Car and Driver even has a whole page dedicated to the “2021 Ram Dakota.”
So, it’s gotta be a thing, right?
Well, thanks to our friends at All Terrain Nation, we have proof (ish) that a midsize Ram truck is definitely in the works – and far enough along to be spotted in camo at a gas station.
So, while we still don’t know much, we’re fairly certain this won’t be a 2021 model – and we can likely thank the Covid-19 pandemic for any delays.
While Ram hasn’t had a midsize truck since the Dakota left in 2011 due to dwindling sales, things have changed in the last 10 years, and the midsize truck segment is picking up – as is seen by the addition of Ram’s sibling Jeep Gladiator.
Thus, the time is definitely right for a new midsize Ram to make an appearance. And if Ram is bringing back a midsize truck, why wouldn’t they use the Dakota name?

It looks so much like a ram 1500 double cab. I suspect they may share many components. The midsize market is there for this truck. I know FCA is concerned that dakota would compete too closely with gladiator but there really is a way for both trucks to be in the segment. The dakota should focus on the low and middle trimmed non offroad specialty trucks. The gladiator could just cater to more of the off road and high end mid size market that dakota does not cover as well.
